Current student. Quesitons about Greek life

Hello,
I am a non-American, engineering sophomore who is not at all interested in frat party culture. For this reason, until now, I had successfully distanced myself from Duke’s Greek culture. However, recently, I have heard arguments from those involved in Greek life that fraternities help build conections and climb the social ladder in any career. I aspire for a job in the likes of Facebook and Google. For careers in this field, does being a member of a fraternity help? Moreover, I generally do not like fraternity initiation activities and detest the drink-till-you-puke scene rampant among Duke frat “bros”. Therefore, I want advice from those with experience on whether joining a fraternity is worth it.
I would also appreciate honest inputs from those who have decided to join fraternites. What aspects of Greek life appealed to you other than opportunities to build social and professional links (if they exist)?

Your time is better spent on your classes and on doing activities that are fun for you. Silicon Valley employers will care about your skills.

There are way saner ways to network than to join a frat. I know people who pledged who still bear the scars. Not worth it.

Ask around, there’s gotta be other fun clubs and hackathons that are better suited for professional networking.
