I've been living in virginia for 3 years now and i got into uva ED as an instater, but now my mom (parent who i live with) unexpectedly got transferred to florida and is moving in the spring. Im finishing out school here in va by staying with my grandmother. In the spring when they send out all the information do you have to prove you are a virginia resident again even though you proved it in your application already to get instate tuition? And also after your first year do you have to prove youre still a resident to get instate tuition for your second year? Im really worried because my mom cant afford to pay out of state tuition and im thinking i might have to look for schools in florida for my second year so i can go to a more affordable school. Anything would help, thanks.

anything anyone? this is really important and affects alot of the decisions i have to make soon

I think you would still be considered an instater. You live with your relative. I think that's still okay.So yeah

yea but im still a dependent on my taxes for my mom. Do you know if va makes you reapply for instate status every year?

UVa is very proud of its honor code. You have to let them know. I think you can become an emancipated student after a year or two.

I think you would be considered in-state first year. However the following years I think you would be out of state. As Kayjo suggests if you try and trick UVa and they find out there is a good chance you would be expelled.

Really though, why ask a college message board which only has limited knowledge. Call the admissions office.

I am a student now. A word of advice: do not f with the honor code. We are really strict. It is a single-sanction code. Lying? Expelled. Stealing? Expelled. Cheating? Expelled. If you try to hide your residency, you would be doing all three.

UVA is also staffed by some of the kindest, most sensible administration I have met. Chances are, they will be understanding.

Just my opinion, for what it is worth.
