Does anyone know if I keep my instate tuition rates if my parents move out of state? We have lived in VA for 10 years. If not, how do I retain my instate residency?

If your parents move OOS, I’m pretty sure you can’t retain instate residency. You are not considered a dependent until you’re 24 (correct me if I’m wrong here).

You will lose your in state tuition if your parents leave. Happened to my friend.

You aren’t considered independent* until you’re 24. I don’t have quite the same problem, but even though I live on my own and provide for myself, I get crap for fin aid because I’m considered dependent on my FAFSA. Sorry Maybe you could emancipate yourself?

For emancipation, I think that has to be done a year ahead of time…I don’t think you are able to become a resident of a state while in school for tuition purposes if your main purpose for being there is higher education…I think there is a rule against that because then many OOS students would do it (claim independence/file for emancipation for IS rates and then still have their parents pay).

My parents were willing to buy a cheap house in VA in order to claim IS residency. Even that would not qualify me for IS :S
