Current Students?

Also, what other services do they have? (medical, fitness, etc) and how are the dorms? and what are some pitfalls of emory?

hey im a freshman (soon to be sophomore) at Emory.
so to answer your questions...
the dorms are good, there are some that are smaller and some that are huge. i live in whats known as the smallest dorm on campus, and honestly it's not bad at all. the pitfalls of emory? well i'd say that there are way too many GERs- general education requirements, the classes that everyone has to take in order to graduate. and emory is a little small..or it feels like that when second semester you keep on running into the same people all the time. but other than that, i love emory.

I would second cookiemonster on the profs. The profs at Emory are amazing. Although I wasn't a student I attended a couple lectures and networked with the profs to get help on my research. They're very excited and open to helping any student with research and have many connections outside of Emory to help you with.

The student body is culturally diverse and homogeneous at the same time. Basically everyone I've become friends with through LL and Facebook are Indian or Asian (I'm caucasian), but JAPs do rule campus! I've found a lot of new england, rich, boarding school graduate, etc. people coming to Emory next fall. But there's a niche for everyone here.

Atlanta is a great city and most people who don't know it well don't find a lot of the cool places. Emory students love Buckhead. I personally detest Buckhead. Yes, it has all the clubs and nightlife and Lenox Mall, but East Atlanta, Little Five, Virginia Highlands, Decatur, Buford Highway, etc. all offer interesting and diverse areas of town to hang out in. Atlanta is not New York City or San Francisco unfortunately. We don't have vast amount of culture in every section of town. But it's possible to find a place that you fit in with and love.

I would say I've had some problems with the professors - I've had three amazing ones and three horrific ones (and the rest were okay). But the bad ones were really bad.

about the professors...
i have to agree with copper45, i've had a few professors who were just wonderful and amazing but at the same time..ive had a couple who just weren't so good. but the professors who weren't so good were either professors who were just there for the semester and not being allowed to come back next semester, or graduate students who taught undergraduate 100 level classes that most people have to take.

because of atlanta and all the clubs and bars, does it feel like theres not enough to do ON campus? or could you pretty mcuh stay on campus most of the time without ever getting bored? i've heard both things..

also, what other schools in the south would you compare emory to? what are similar schools (emorys my fav but i need some others similar to it...ive looked at a bunch but i'd like to hear what you guys say!)

thanks!

vandebilt is the same idea, own beautiful campus in the middle of a big city (although vandy's actually right in the middle of a big city where as emory is more suburban), wash u is really similar also although i didnt visit there, that's just what i hear.

you can stay on campus on not be broed but you need to be actively looking for clubs and stuff to do on campus if you dont want to be bored during the day. nigths there are frats and the like, but for the most part, the best is off campus.

Washu's campus is not that pretty. It's nice, but it's not georgous.

copper, who were the bad professors that you had?

does it feel like the typical college atmosphere is lacking, since theres no football team and, so i hear, a lack of school spirit? like do people hang out and bbq and all that stuff around campus during the day, even though there are no football games to tailgate for?

No, not really. Its not that spirit is lacking, but a visable display of it is. Talking about how much they love it here is a typical conversational topic for people, but there are not big banner of pride hanging around.

so what do people generally do during the day on campus... say on a saturday afternoon?
