I use an old Epson Stylus Color 480SXU. It works very well. It's a color inkjet, quality is not excellent and it's slow. However, it uses USB, and my dad bought a box of black and color inks for cheap. They're all new inks, and it's enough to last me for a long, long time. It's worth looking at older printer models if you don't need fast printing or amazing quality. And it's more likely that inexpensive generic inks will be available.

If you plan on printing in any volume, laser is cheapest, prints fastest, and looks much nicer too. Toner cost per page is significantly cheaper than ink. If you don't necessarily need to print a lot, inkjet is probably cheaper than laser (which has higher up-front cost)

One of the most important things when selecting ink printers is the cost of cartridges. Most printer companies sell heavily-discounted ink printers at a loss and charge obscene prices for the ink cartridges to make up for it.

But if you're going to be an art or architecture major, get something that does nice vector/lineart and photos, and consider an 11x17.

I have a Q 4 anyone currently attending USC. I'm going to be a HS sr. this fall, am from ohio, and hoping to go into journalism. I got a 33 on my act which was much better than my sat score of a 1980. Would my act score get me a decent scholarship? Also, would the transition from ohio to cali be difficult (i'm pretty outgoing but obviously there's a big difference between going to college in ohio and california). Thanks for the help!

I got a 33 also, applied for communication, but didn't get a scholarship. I think scholarship consideration extends beyond test scores, though. 33 is pretty high; I'd say you have a great shot.

Really!?! That's great thank you soo much! Also... What's the social life like there?

In a word, awesome... but it used to be better.

Hey mkm89 -- we have similar SAT and ACT scores, and I am going to USC this fall with a Presidential Scholarship (1/2 tuition x 4 yrs), plus a bucket load of free grant money from USC. It'll be cheaper for me to go to USC than my state school here in Washington. Apply! You never know! They will contact you in the early spring if they want you to come to campus and interview for the big scholarships. Good luck!

wow congrats that's awesome!! I think i'm goin 2 apply and just wait and see what happens or if i'm offered ant $.

does anyone know if the dorm rooms in birnkrant have waste baskets in them?

I'm pretty sure they do.

So I'm assuming that all dorm rooms have waste baskets? At least, that's what it looked like when I saw the virtual tour on USC Housing's website. Where do you empty your waste basket once it's full? Is there are place to deposit the contents? Also, I am aware that there's a mini refrigerator per dorm room, but are there also microwaves provided?

Microwaves are provided. I don't know what the policy is if you blow something up though. Speaking of cool things to do with microwaves, put an empty bag of chips in on high for ~8 seconds. I don't want to ruin the surprise, so I'll suffice it to say that the result is awesome. I would also advise trying this out on someone else's microwave ;).

I asked this question a LONG time ago, but I don't think anyone answered:

Does USC provide discounts on magazine subscriptions?

Can anyone tell me some stuff about Helenes? More in depth than the web site does :) If it's time consuming, rewarding etc. etc.

There was a closet in Marks Hall with a big trashcan that we could dump our smaller ones in. Don't know about Birnkrant.

I never personally noticed any magazine subscription discounts, but I also didn't look for them. Last year we got free subscriptions to the LA times, which will hopefully continue this year.

I know nothing of the Helenes, sorry!

those are known as 'trash chutes'. Don't want people thinking we just dump our garbage in a closet...

The impression I got of the Helenes was that they were about two greek letters away from being a sorority.

AHAHAHAH "dump our garbage in a closet..."

Nope, no trash chutes in Mark's Hall. There really were just closets in the hallways with big trash cans in it.

Do we get tacks to hang stuff up on that cardboard wall thingy? Or do we have to buy them?
