I remember how fantastic this site was for me when I was deciding between schools and also after I had decided so any questions you have feel free to ask. I consider myself to be somewhat of an expert on the school, the down, residence hall life and other things so ask away.

A bit about me:
I am a computer science and engineering major currently living in Emerson Hall of Cuarto. I am an active member of Computer Science Club and Davis Anime Club so if you want to know about those clubs let me know.

1) How rigorous is the Computer Science major? I was thinking of double majoring in both Computer Science and Animal Science (I was admitted into the Animal Science major), and wonder if that’s even possible.

2) Approximately how many minutes away is Cuarto from the main campus?

woooooo, i will be a freshman this fall for Computer Science and Engineering!
I really love the Emerson Hall too, and actually I am planning to live in there for my first year!
Question: How is the air conditioning system in Emerson?? I cannot stand heat at all… Which is the beat dorm area you think, and why?
A lot of people chose Segundo just because it’s closer to the ARC, I really think with a bike it’s not far at all…

Even though I’m a huge pc supporter I would honestly say It doesn’t matter. Pick whatever computer feels right for you. PCs are good for games and are significantly cheaper than macs. You also have more options when shopping for PCs which could be either a good thing or a bad thing. Macs are fairly well built and stable machines but you don’t get a lot of the support that you would with a PC. They are also typically more stable than PCs and get less viruses although UC Davis gives you Sophos Antivirus for PC and Mac for free and its really good.

2) So this year Tercero was VERY crowded because a lot of new buildings have been built there and there were a lot of old buildings. Segundo was very empty because a lot of the buildings are being renovated. Next year all of Tecero’s older buildings are being torn down and the Segundo buildings will finish renovation so I suspect it will be the opposite. As far as location goes I personally like Segundo. Its right next to Campus, The Arc, University Mall, and it has the biggest Dining Commons. Tercero is right next to all the engineering buildings so some people like it for that. Your orientation will be in Tercero.

3) Davis anime club or DAC as we call it is pretty much the best club ever. We watch anime every week on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 10pm. After club on Thursdays we usually go to some place thats open late to eat and talk like In-N-Out or Quickly’s. We also do a lot of other events such as capture the flag an night with glowsticks, have trips to japan town, pokemon parties, and movie marathons. The members are all really friendly and nice. There are a few weaboos but not many. Meetings are very casual which leads to hilarious comments during showings.

RAs get free housing and a 180 meal plan. Although its not really free because we have around a 19.5 hour work week. If you are interested in becoming an RA it seems like a lot of fun but not a lot of people are chosen. You have to interview and write an essay. I talked about anime club a above.

omg there’s an anime club? How big is the club? The one in my school is pretty lame, but if i get accepted i might join! Seems like there’s other anime fans on this site yessss. XD

I wonder if there’s a k-pop club, or some k-pop related dance group? hmm

CS major is pretty rigorous. It is probably one of the more difficult majors on campus. However, its around 108 units so it wouldn’t be impossible to double major with it an animal science but it may be difficult. There is also a CS Minor which I believe is somewhere between 30-40 units depending on how much overlap there is between your animal science classes.

2)Cuarto is about a 5-10 minute bike, 15-25 minute walk, or a 10 minute bus ride to campus.

Umm if you know some thats great but if you don’t know any you’ll be fine also. I would recommend taking ECS 10 if you don’t know any programming and ECS 30 if you have some knowledge. Although the professor that is teaching 30 Fall quarter is laughably easy but he wont prepare you for ECS 40 which is considered to be the CS weeder class. I realize that I’m not actually answering your question, sorry. C and C++ are always good since ECS 30 and 40 are taught in those respectively. Java might also be worth looking into since its used a lot in industry and helps if you are looking for an internship. Once you know one programming language others aren’t difficult to pick up so it will definitely give you an edge in your CS classes.

CS club is also an awesome club. Just this last Friday we rented out the entire lobby of Kemper and had a massive LAN party from like 5pm to 4am. We have weekly meetings where either companies will come in and give presentations, we talk about classes for the next quarter and which professors to avoid, discuss plans for the quarter/ plan events, or other miscellaneous things. We also have board game nights and we take visits to various campuses of companies throughout the year.

Air conditioning in Emerson has been fine. Its actually nice because you can control it for your suite. It broke like 2 or 3 times but it was fixed fairly quickly and it hasn’t happened since early winter quarter. Yeah, distance doesn’t make a huge difference when you have a bike. People in Segundo or Tercero wont even know where Cuarto is half the time and they think its really far but its actually not. However, if you don’t have a bike DO NOT LIVE IN CUARTO! I cannot stress this enough! Also, you don’t get to choose which specific hall you have a preference for but you can list preference for area and living style. I personally think that they just take these preferences and throw them into a big fire because from the people that I’ve talked with, where you put your preferences seems to have no correlation to where they end up living.

I’m gonna come in and help out a bit, I’m a 2nd year econ major, considering a double major in linguistics or IR.

@mytime09
Cuarto is all suites, meaning 2-4 or so rooms connected by a common room. Emerson and Webster have pools and hot tubs. I didn’t really go to Thoreau much when I was a freshman, but they were all 10 person suites I think.
They have a DC (dining commons) there now, which they didn’t have when I was a freshman. Actually the threadstarter would probably know more about cuarto than me, haha.

To switch majors, you may have to fit certain requirements (I think this is mainly applicable to engineering, when I switched from biosci to econ a few weeks ago I didn’t have any problems, and this was during 2nd year spring quarter)
Other than that, you just have to get a bunch of signatures, which isn’t hard to do. Just have to go to the right place.

I know the max number of units for the C.S. major is 108, but how do you get it down to 98? I know that linear algebra is 3 units. Can you take both ecs 189 and 192 so the internship and the 189 course which is 1-5 will lower my units? I’m a double major for C.S. and Psychology with an emphasis in psychometrics.
