Current USC student taking questions

sher2000: Did they just change that about trustee and presidential?? That wasnt the case 4 years ago… in pardee you dont get an actual desk. it’s a strip of wood at the end of the room and that’s your “desk”, (like 40 inches deep). all the times in Marks its just very loud and crazy, my friend was an RA there junior year and it was his absolute last choice. Marks of course is way better than new/north in terms of being loud. is the raddison still an option? ive only head good things about that. i lived in parkside and it was the best option for me. i understand it’s not for everyone… but parkside > evk

hawkwings - ditto the film symposium!! i regret not taking that. my roommate took sailing TWICE. it was that good (sailing beginners then sailing novice - something like that). :)

Justfighton, yes Birnkrant became the Pres/trustee scholar dorm this year. Not all Pres/trustee scholars live there but you cannot live there unless you are Presidential or higher. The best part in my opinion was they got to move in two days early for a “retreat”. It was nice to not have to fight the crowds on MI day!

I’m not sure how to apply/what to apply for. I’m thinking about auditioning for the school of theatre, but do you do that before you apply for USC, or do you specify that you want to audition on your application form, or…? I’ve tried to look it up but haven’t found information.

I’m also considering majoring in computer sciences, which is clearly not in the same school as theatre is. If I’m accepted to the school of theatre, can I take courses/major in subjects other than theatre?

And finally (I’m sorry this question is so long) is it better to apply to a specific school, or just apply as “undecided” if you haven’t made up you mind entirely?

[Important Dates](http://theatre.usc.edu/admissions/importantdates.html)

That was really easy to find; don’t make everyone do all the work for you…

i was wondering what’s in each dorm room! like are there fridges LOOOL and also what would be good to bring! like appliances wise meaning printer etc.

NC mom: wow… i always knew it was the most requested dorm on campus… but this is… are there even that many trust/pres scholars at USC… hmm…

alliegator: fridge/microwave in every dorm. if you want a printer, go for it. or pay 12 cents a page at any of the libraries. regarding a printer, i bought one… but isn’t that necessary depending on the major. if you’re an athlete, free printing at galen center. if you’re in annenberg (comm school), free printing there… get an electric water kettle. make tea/ramen/hot chocolate. oh and if you don’t live in parkside, you’ll need a fan.

BandTenHut: Thanks so much! I really did look, I just couldn’t figure out where the sub menu for it was. But thanks.

Justfighton, yes there are! I know several who chose not to live in Birnkrant too!

this is also another lame question, but how much closet space is there / can you put things under the beds (like storage)

Its not lame at all. Yes you can actually call and housekeeping will come and put your bed higher. You can get those plastic bins with drawers.I saw a room with rolling shelves(the metal ones)The Closet is not that bad but in some rooms it is a sliding door and only opens on one side. You can get a hanging bar (10 dollars) at the container store and make a second bar in the closet. You also get a chest of drawers in the room.Get a nice liner for them. They are yucky.

Search youtube for usc dorm videos. I think some students did “tour” videos of their dorm rooms.

alliegator: I bought one of these freshman year - easy to break apart and store over the summer. Used it all 4 years at 'SC - fits really well under the bed

[Wire Cube Shelving System : Target](http://www.target.com/p/Wire-Cube-Shelving-System/-/A-10882811)

Let’s talk meal plans. What do you guys recommend for a petite young woman who nonetheless enjoys her meals and frequent snacks?

95% of students get the basic Cardinal/Gold meal plan. It’s fine.

Snowdog: I recommend the Gold plan. You can eat all you want at dining halls and have 500 dining dollars to spend at Trojan Grounds, campus center, and other places each semester. You pay $300 for the 500 dining dollars. Trojan plan, in my opinion, is way too much. My friend who is petite and loves trying different foods had around 1500 dining dollars left with a month left of school. She’s been treating everyone to meals since she has so much left.

Good info, thanks. I’m thinking gold is the way to go so she can get her starbucks etc. Does the same card get swiped for laundry (but different money)?

Depends on the place. The USC ID card will have your meal plan and dining dollars on it, as well as your discretionary account. When paying for stuff at places that take dining dollars, you need to specify that you want to use dining. Other places take discresh only. Laundry machines are either coin-operated or card swipe. Card swipe ones will use money from the discretionary account.

Laundry in Birnkramt uses a totally different card which you must load with cash or a credit card. My son got the basic meal plan (Gold?) with no extra dollars. He found that he didn’t spend $300 in discretionary money each semester so to spend an extra $300 per semester to get $500 in credit wasn’t worth it. With the minimal plan, you can basically eat in either dining hall as many times as you want in a day. He often will swipe in to EVK and decide nothing appeals to him and leave to go swipe in again at Parkside.

Snowdog: The basic plan should be fine… but half of my suitemates freshman year had Trojan Plan so we used the catering service all the time. and Trojan Plan is nice because now that campus center is open, it makes going to Lemonade worth it

what is the social life like at usc? is there a greek system? how are the athletics? what kind of people go there? are all of them very intelligent, or are some people who are average?
