Curtain rods or alllowed to put one up?

My D will be a first-year in a high-rise single. Are there curtain rods for the windows, and if not, is it okay to put one up? I’ve been puzzled because it seems that schools are super-strict about how to hang pictures on the wall without making holes, but I’ve seen mentions of putting up curtain rods and extra closet rods.

Generally tension rods are okay for inside mount. You’ll need the width and depth before buying those. For outside mount the larger Command hooks with removable tabs and a rod are allowed usually, but check the specific rules at the residence hall. One bit of advice about the Command hooks is that the wall surface needs to be clean so have a wipe handy and the sticky stuff is supposed to “cure” a day before having weight put on it.

Hi,

I was in a single in high-rise 5 last year and we put curtains up and a tension rod worked perfectly! The only other thing that we had to do was get the fire retardant spray and treat the curtains.

Also, you should keep the empty can in your room to be able to tell them which product was used if asked during the fire inspections.

Finally, just as an FYI, there is also a company online that sells curtains that are already fire retardant if you are interested. But keep the information/packaging handy so that you can show it if needed.

Thanks much!

@HappyCamper2015 Do you remember the dimensions of the window?

Hi,

I’m not sure if all the rooms have the same size window, but the INSIDE measurement for my room window was:

Inside width 53 1/2 inches and the height was 60 inches. But you may want bring it up 1/4 inch so that it does not drag.

Good luck and welcome to Cornell!

I do not think any of the dorm room closets are very large, so my mom found other ways to help with storage.

She found the large storage drawers from Bed Bath and Beyond extremely helpful. They fit right under my bed and held a ton of things. They stacked on top of each other and I was able to get 6 to fit just fine. The drawers worked best for me because I did not have to pull the entire bin out from under the bed anytime I needed something, I just pulled open the drawer. She hid the drawers with an extra long bed skirt she ordered from Amazon.

Also, she bought me a cushioned sitting bench (from Bed Bath and Beyond) that also opened to double as storage.

This year she will not be doing as much as she did my first year (I think she is over it! Ha, ha!!) But she did get me a hanging mirror that has storage in it too. It looks similar to the door hanging mirror I had last year, except it is thicker and opens up to store things like my ties, watches, keys etc.

Thanks so much! We’ll definitely look into those drawers, and start looking for curtains.

Your mom has a lot of great ideas
