I was thinking about subscribing to CUTV for next semester. I don't watch crazy amounts of TV but it's something nice to do every once in a while and I would prefer to have one in my room than going to the lounge. So is it worth it to subscribe to CUTV? Do a lot of CU students actually subscribe? Thanks.

I think that many do...

I'll be in a suite next year with a common room so we'll probably subscribe for the common room and put a big TV in there.

My girlfriend had CUTV last year and seemed to enjoy it... most people get along fine without it, though. (My townhouse, and apparently only my townhouse, miraculously got free cable the whole year. No one could explain it and we didn't ask.) My advice is show up on campus, see how you do without it, and if you decide it's worth the fee after about a month go for it--but you might find you don't really need it.

I don't know anyone in Court Hall that actually got the service, because there was a TV lounge at the end of the hall and a large TV downstairs....but we really just used that for movies.

I thought I'd miss having cable, but I really didn't miss it at all, and if there was something I really wanted to watch...I'd just go to the lounge.

trade in your tv for a gym membership

I didn't have TV freshman year, and I didn't miss it one bit. I kept myself entertained fine without it. Between class, clubs, the gym, partying, and just hanging out with my new friends and meeting new people, I filled my time pretty well. I think that if you have a lot of time to spend just sitting and watching tv, you probably aren't getting the most out of your college experience. It may be an overly philosophical one, but it is my view.

You won't watch as much TV as you did at home. If you do, you're missing out.

I watched maybe a couple hours of TV total, all year.

If you're going to watch TV you can do it in the lounge. I had a TV to play DVDs on but my DVD player broke, so it was basically rendered useless. I don't really watch much TV to begin with, but I didn't find having a TV necessary at all. I actually didn't watch TV the entire time I was at college. If you really want to watch TV just download shows from DC++ and watch them on your laptop; it's free.

unless you really want to watch a lot, it's not necessary. most shows are on DC++ within a day at most, and really popular shows are often watched in common rooms

I had CUTV last year on my computer and I really enjoyed it. It was a change from not having a tv freshman year. Sometimes you don't want to watch certain things with a roomful of people and its nice to have when people visit. It is true that you won't watch it nearly as much as you do at home. And if you do then something is wrong. When I got busy, days would go by without me watching it at all. But if you don't mind the extra expense and you enjoy a little down time then I think it is worth it.

sorry, but what's DC++?

Search the Cornell forum, there have been half a dozen threads on it.

What is CUTV?

an acronym.

for.......

It's TV. That you can also watch on your computer.

No, it's not really worth it to get a TV at Cornell. You'll be doing a lot of work and you'll be spending free time with friends/dorm-mates, going to parties etc

Cornell University Tele Vision.

just a guess.
