I am attend the CVW in April. Any one have any suggestions for what to pack and/or what to expect? The letter I recieved was not very detailed or informative so any info is appreciated.

...just search CVW on the forum and you'll fine a plethora of info. have fun!

I'm attending CVW the April 12th weekend. Can someone who has gone describe to me how your visit went? Will we have to pay for anything once we're there? Will we have time/be able to buy souvenirs?

Also, from what I've been reading, it seems as if you're not the only one attending a particular weekend and that many attend. Is this true? Will we be herded as a group or will we follow a particular plebe around?

Sorry if this stuff has been posted elsewhere- after doing a search, I just figured this thread would be the best place to put my aforementioned questions.

Thanks for all of your time and consideration- GO NAVY!

You could get by with no money, but I would bring some for the mid store/gift shop or in case you order food. When I went we were each assigned a plebe to stay with so it was more individual, but I stayed in a room with 4 plebes and there were 3 candidates, so we all went places together. It really depends on your escorts.

do the mids volunteer for hosting or are they chosen?

Concerning the visit, do they give you any freebies like they do during summer seminar? I'm not talking about like t-shirts and whatnot, but a folder and some pens would be nice. =)

Also, can someone who has gone describe the order of events that happened during your visit i.e.

6am wake up
6:15 watch morning formation
6:30 go to breakfast
7:00 go to calculus class

etc etc

Thanks for all your help everyone. My visit is this weekend and I'm very excited.

Alright just got back from my weekend and I have decided that based on my experiences at both West Point and Annapolis, I enjoyed West Point more. With that said...

GO ARMY! BEAT NAVY!

But yes, good luck to everyone here on collegeconfidential heading to USNA and hey, maybe we'll see each other at the Army-Navy game.

spectrez, you wouldn't be from CA would you?

penquinz,

I am. lol are you that guy I saw when I was leaving and taking pictures?

I was talking to one of my Coastie friends today who went to a track meet at USNA this past weekend. He told me that there was a drinking incident involving a firstie and a drag (CVW kid). On Friday or Saturday night, the two went out and both of them drank. Once they got back to the Academy, they were both breathalized and both obviously tested positive for drinking. I can guaruntee you that the drag is not going to be going into the class of 2011 this summer. Even at NAPS, if you get caught drinking and you are underage, you get the boot. So far, about 7 people have been kicked out because of drinking related incidents. Now as for the firstie at USNA, I'm not sure what they're going to do. So just for future refrence be careful. Why waste a career for a beer.

Umm. I dunno. I'm the Asian kid from Oklahoma. Are you Jermeiah? (sp)

Well technically, that firstie has to be at least 21. I'm guessing he won't be kicked out, but be on probation or some sort.

penQuinz,

Why yes, yes I am. Fancy seeing you here!

spectrez, what company did you drag with? And if you could elaborate, Im just curious why you liked West Point better.

APan5,

I dragged with 1st Company.

But yes, I could explain why I liked West Point more than the Naval Academy:

One thing that I noticed was how small the campus was. All the pictures I saw of the Naval Academy made it seem like the Naval Academy was huge. Boy was I mistaken. Parking was also a hassle for my dad and me, and I didn't like the way that the street near Faragut field was flooded a little. Moreover, the midshipman's rooms were tiny as compared to West Point, and while having a shower in your room is convenient, I found it odd that they left out the toilet.

When I visited classrooms, I noticed that West Point's campuses were more well equipped- the classrooms themselves looked nicer at West Point (at West Point I visited an Economics, Environmental Science, Geography, and Law class while at the Naval Academy I visited a Chemistry, Calculus, Government, and Navigation class). The technology (computers specifically) at West Point are also better than the computers at the Naval Academy which really surprised me considering the Naval service is more technological than the Army.

During meal time, I did not feel very impressed at the Naval Academy. Meals at the Naval Academy were very relaxed, almost like meals in any high school cafeeteria. Midshipmen also lesft the table as soon as they were finished. Furthermore, there was no predetermined order in passing food or rules govrning eating like there is at West Point. While you may enjoy this kind of environment, I didn't. I felt like since this wa a service academy, there should be some sort of regulation concerning everything, including eating.

Lastly, I also did not like the gift shop at the Naval Academy. While this may seem a little trivial, the gift shop, being the first place I visited during my visit, was my first clue that hinted to me that the Naval Academy was not the institution for me. I found many of the items at the Naval Academy gift shop to be of low quality and very expensive when compared to West Point's gift shop.

Well there you have it: those are all the reasons I can remember why I didn't like the Naval Academy as much as I do West Point. The Naval Academy does seem like a fun place to go- it's more relaxed, there are a lot of restaurants and other places to hang out on campus, your actually close to civilization etc etc, but it just didn't have what I looked for. Hopefully one day, after my career in the Army is done, I can join the United States Navy- I've always wanted to, and still, want to be in the Navy one day.

Trust me, when you're rushed for class, you will thank the gods that it only takes 7 minutes to walk to your class across the yard...especially when it's 18 degrees outside with a 0 degree windchill...and I know for a FACT that WP gets a helluva lot colder than that.

Mealtime...you might think you want meals to be strictly regimented or whatever, but you'll be glad that you don't have to worry about what food to pass which direction when you're being rated by your 2/C. Meals aren't exactly fun as a plebe, but as an upperclass they'll be one of the few relaxing moments during your day.

As for the drag caught drinking...well, he was my roommate's drag. The story circulated our company before we even woke up the next morning. They're still deciding what to do with the firstie...his future is up in the air at the moment, but I can't imagine him getting off very easy. After the incident, the OOW told my roommate that the drag can never leave his sight until he departs.

A common bit of advise from the upperclass: be smart while you're being stupid. This drag...and firstie...obviously lack sound judgement.

Haha, spec. I'm Duc (Duke). Funny how things work out. Small world out there.

If you are basing your decision on the quality of merchandise in the gift shop, or the capacity of the computers, or how large/small your dorm room is, or the drainage system on the roads along the athletic field, or that you can eat "normally" at meal time and lack the indigestion from eating on the edge of your seat, perhaps you are better suited to go elsewhere.

Please remember however, it snows up in Highland Falls....lots, and running up those hills when they are covered with ice is no picnic. The same companies that make the "gift shop" clothing is the same ones that stock west point....and USAFA for that matter. The size of the rooms don't matter....you won't be spending much time in them anyway no matter where you go...and at least Bancroft has AC. As for classes....you gotta be kidding. As for civilization....you may come to find that 4 years in highland falls will be claustrophobic, no matter how large the post is... at least in Annapolis you can march to Nordstroms instead of Newberg....no comparison.

Now if you tell me that you liked the regimentation, comraderie, courses, career path to infantry or armor, or the fact that you have a shot at rangers....that I can understand.

But a puddle on the road? You gotta be kidding.....

best of luck....and as much as I love USMA (they accepted our son after all) it's GO NAVY all the way!!!

lol sheesh it seems like everyone's bashing my rationale behind my decision. Be advised that in my "Army versus Naval Career" thread post, I already mentioned that during my candidate visit I would have to be really wowed to choose USNA over USMA because I already had a plan in mind set out for me (go to USMA, major in something I liked, serve my 8 years in the army as a ground pounder, something I've always wanted to do, then join the navy later in life if I still wanted to at that time) that would cover most, if not all, of the key points I had for myself. Since nothing at USNA particularly wowed me I figured that my plan was the best plan for me.

With all that said- yes I did consider career options after graduation. Yes, I did consider the quality of life at each Academy. But, all things considered, I prefer the life at West Point.

Why I visit the Naval Academy forum still, I don't know lol.

Oh I almost forgot: GO ARMY! BEAT NAVY!

^^^^ thank you for your post- for a bit I was beginning to wonder.....

best of luck at USMA- it is a wonderful institution, and a great place-

as for "beat navy".... LOL..... fat chance!!! But good luck anyway.... the contests are always great, and it's a wonderous thing that it will be the only field upon which your will stand divided!
