Cvw

Hey, I am at CVW right now and we have a little free time before classes start today. Thought I would drop in and say hello while I've got the chance to use the computer. My whole room got to sleep in today. How awesome is that!

^^^^^
Plebes sleeping in??? I thought VADM Fowler was cracking down on the Yacht Club atmospehere at the academy. :)

My son calls yesterday to tell me he has to pick up his "drag." I'm thinking "drag" is navy-speak for "a date."

I'm kind of getting happy and concerned at the same time. Then he tells me that's the name for a CVW person.

Upon learning that, I am not as happy and less concerned. Make sense? I think it does for a USNA mom! :D

Drag is just a generic term for someone you "drag" around behind you, like a candidate.

Back in the "olden days" it meant a date with a girl as well, but I don't think it's used to describe dates much anymore.

^^^^^
Back in the old days we had "drags" and "bricks." A "drag" was a date but the definition has expanded to include somebody being escorted.

Dragging a candidate is a good deal for plebes because it gets them out of chopping in Bancroft Hall and sometimes they also get media privileges.

Oh, I understand the meaning now.

Hope he gets a good media priv. Do they volunteer to do this, or are they assigned?

I hope my mid-wannabee's visit is going better than her travel to get there! A 2 1/2 hour layover turned into a missed flight (mechanical problems), followed by another 2 1/2 hour layover while waiting for a later flight.

I have about three hours before CVW is officially over. Yes GA, the plebes with a "drag" don't have to chop. My roomates have repeatedly shared me in the hallways so neither one has to chop! But i've pretty much been rotating on which guy in my room I follow so that if one has a free period, I'd go with the other to a class or if one wanted to sleep in, I'd just go with the other to breakfast. It kind of worked out nice because i got to see that much more of the academy. I will say one thing though: if you want to make a good impression I would strongly recommend wearing slacks and a nice shirt. I kind of thought that was required or expected for candidates, but I'm in the minority. I'm not condeming the ones who didn't dress up, but if you want to make a good impression and you're serious about coming here, wear something nice. The mids here are basically in a suit during the day so you wouldn't want to feel out of place or anything! Anyways, I'm going to get off my escort's computer now and get ready to leave.

I just got back from CVW. It was great. The mids didn't exactly volunteer to have a drag, but they love having you there because they don't have to chop. My mid and her roommate were really friendly and had a positive attitude about USNA. A lot of the plebes I talked to were very cynical and kept asking why the heck I wanna go to the Naval Academy. They don't want to leave though, so don't let their attitudes get to you :)

Also, I think it's o.k. to wear jeans. The plebes in my company were all like, "Why do the drags think they shouldn't wear jeans to this?"

Yea, don't wear a suit, it looks pretentious. We're not writing evals on you so don't worry about it. I would be comfortable. You're going to spend at least the next 2 years (through youngster year) almost solely in an uncomfortable uniform so enjoy civvies while you can.
I had a NAPSter last week and it was cool to get to not chop but we didn't get media privileges or sleep-ins. Those aren't granted a lot, we've only gotten like 2 of those. Oh well, you rate what you skate.

jack traveler,
So the mids sponsering/showing around the drags do not write evals? My d said that her mentioned some kind of questionnaire concerning the weekend...?

how was the banquet at the end of the cvw?

^^^^^
The banquet is scheduled for 16 Nov 2007.

Son had a good "drag." Kid was on top of it, and he and his roomies agree he would be a good addition to USNA. They PT'd the heck out of him and he held his own, so it was all good. Son loved having not to chop anywhere.

so only the november cvw has a banquet?

This thread almost brings me back to my cvw... it was good times. I drove down from Philly so instead of leaving on saturday morning, I drove a car full of plebes throughout annapolis all day saturday. At the time I loved it, and even as a 2/c many of those firsties remebered me from that weekend... btw, as was stated earlier, a suit is unecessary, however I would still dress nicely. If it were my choice i'd avoid jeans, maybe a polo and khakis... one more thing, mids will laugh at you if you wear a letter jacket full of medals and awards. Im only saying that cause ive seen it and laughed at it more than a few times myself.

Quick question maybe a current mid could answer...I will be flying from Annapolis all the way back to Cambodia following CVW, a very long flight:) anyway, i will have a pretty large backpack with me, likely bigger than anyone elses since it will have everything I needed for the past two weeks (I am in Colorado before Annapolis)...will there be a problem with having a big backpack as far as room space is concerned?

Also, do I need to bring a pillow and sheets? I am jsut asking cause I wont have a whole lot of room in my bag, though of course I will make room to accomadate CVW :) I am bringing my suit for the banquet, but was planning on wearing slacks and a polo the rest of the time...sound good?

I was told by the mid who was dragging me that I didn't need to do any of the Sat AM training session, but when I joined in and did the whole thing, it seemed to go over well.

Had a great time. I-day, here I come (assuming medical and nomination come through)!

The CVW letter says to bring swim wear and workout gear. What should we bring? Just shorts and a tshirt to work out in and running shoes? and a regular old bathing suit? Was anything done in the pool at this CVW?

I don't think they hit the pool at CVW. You mainly go to class and any/all training classes with your plebe.
