Does anyone know the total number of applicants and the acceptance rate at CWRU for the Class of 2022? Just curious because last year the school made an announcement I think in January, and this year I can’t seem to find any information on it.
If you mean for this year, the common data set is released typically a week or two into the fall semester, after they certify the exact cohort for the incoming class for federal reporting requirements.
They haven’t released the official numbers yet, but in a recent article on The Daily, Case stated that it was under 30%:
"A record 26,646 students applied to Case Western Reserve, with the admissions team reviewing 58,522 transcripts and 89,106 letters of recommendation.
Ultimately, fewer than 30 percent of applicants were offered admission—and those who arrived on campus this week comprise one of the most academically accomplished incoming classes in Case Western Reserve history."
With 1390 incoming class, and assume 30% acceptance rate, the yield has improved to at least 17%. Seems like there are fewer OH residents in the incoming class vs previous years. The size of the incoming class is a fair amount higher than the 1250-1300 range, and that may explain the waitlist situation for the class of 2022.
Keep in mind that binding ED1 and binding ED2 are probably above 50% acceptance rate to Case Western.
Maybe @Bopper can get that information, about how many ED1 and ED2 seats are filled first. That then changes the number of seats available for RD and EA candidates so the acceptance rate really needs to subtract out the ED1 and ED2 seats. This is why it seems to be a much lower rate, because of binding early decision taking so many seats.
My numbers maybe out of date somewhat… that said… when DS went to the admitted day in April and the subsequent stay over, we asked admissions about the stats. They said CWRU, for class of 2021 (I think, could even be earlier), took about 15% of incoming class thru ED 1/2. The acceptance rate for ED1/ED2 and EA were in the high 30s whereas the RD rate was in the low 20s. I would move a couple of % lower for class of 2022… and even more for class of 2023. Class of 2022 was filled to the rim and Case didn’t pull students off the waitlist. There were some modifications of housing arrangements like take some floors of Clark for freshmen (heard this from my son’s friend who is attending CW as a frosh now) due to the over-enrollment (no forced triples though). The % of kiddos Case taking in thru ED rounds is low vs other top rank schools, so it potentially has a lot of room to move that portion and which will affect the acceptance rate in EA/RD rounds significantly.
My recommendation for anyone who is interested in CW is to apply ED or EA. With no supplemental essay, just send in the core common app. by Nov. 1st. Results for ED/EA should come out a few days before X’mas. RD rounds will get way more challenging in acceptances, esp. w/ the over-enrollment situation for class of 2022. It will be a mistake to assume CW being a backup school these days, it isn’t and it shouldn’t.
Although our son ultimately went to another school for his biomed/biophysics major, it was an exceedingly difficult choice after the CW admitted day, the campus visits, and the stay-over. For prospies, esp. outside Ohio, try to make a visit to campus. We really like everything around university circle - the foods, the museums etc. Good luck to every applicant to class of 2023.
Mickey2dad, where did your son end up?
Judd
@Plimpington2 JHU - we let him to make the final call even I was pushing him very hard to CW (considering the cost, the overall feel) + my concerns with the cut throatiness of JH in biomed majors - but he wants to be closer to our eldest daughter there instead being alone in Cleveland… So… He is having a decent time there so far, still too early, making some friends already and ready for the avalanche of homework and reading materials. Ha.
@bopper … My S is from a Governor’s school in Mid Atlantic… Has a GPA of a little under 4.0, but has great SAT scores and ECs with good essays. We are in a dilemma to do EA or RD… Do u suggest that he improve his GPA above 4 with the senior first semester and apply in RD or applying in EA has a better chance? Thanks.
From 2018-9 dataset:
Applied: 26642
Accepted; 7794
Enrolled: 1394
Acceptance Rate: 29%
Yield: 17.8%
@angeltalk So is weighted GPA is under 4.0? What is his unweighted?
What courses is he taking now? What did he take last year?
Questions to ask: What is the trend in his GPA? Flat? Upward?
If he is flat, what makes you think he would do better now?
What does he want to major in?
@Bopper Thanks for the info… are chances higher with EA than RD? are the admit rates similar between the two?
@bopper Weighted is under 4.0. All his AP scores are 5s. Unweighted probably in the 3.6 range… currently taking 6 AP courses… Trend is definitely up… his junior GPA is much higher than sophomore GPA… he is currently doing much better in his senior courses… Mostly As in AP courses… Desired major is biomedical. our major dilemma is do it now with EA (he can present his first quarter grades) or do with RD with first semester grades?
What were his grades in the AP Classes last year? Which AP classes did he take?
Generally AP Scores aren’t used as much in college admissions (many people take AP classes in senior year after they are admitted).
Which AP classes is he taking this year?
@angeltalk I don’t have info on the stats on EA vs ED vs RD.
Does your son have Naviance? If you have enough data points for CWRU at your school, you can see the difference between ED and RD there (not sure about EA).
CWRU does Consider interest in admissions…applying early shows interest.
@bopper Yes he has Naviance. will check that out… we might end up doing EA and then submit 1rst quarter senior grades. Thanks.
That is what I would suggest
@angeltalk has your son “shown interest” in case?
Realize you don’t have to visit if that is a long trip, but do sign up for alumi interviews in that case.
@bopper Yes, we have visited the campus early this year as a registered participant… We are attending some webinars and the Case rep is coming to his school as well. We have requested an interview as well, but haven’t heard back. we have decided to do EA instead of RD… Hopefully thats the right choice !!
Did you interview at Case? if so you don’t need to do an alumni interview.
If not, alumni interviews are done by volunteer alumni so you have to have one in your area + they have to have time
