D+ currently in AP/1st quarter

I have a really bad grade in AP Bio, its not that i dont understand the subject material, its just that im always docked on tests and labs for dumb mistakes. I have been trying very hard to learn how to write bio FRQS and answer mult choice questions and such but say If this grade keeps going until the end of the first quarter, should i drop the class? Will college admissions prefer that i stick with the class or would it be better for me so it will have a lesser effect on my GPA? If it helps, im looking to go into engineering, possibly BME

if you dropped the class mid year, they’ll at least suspect you failed or were on the verge of failing the class. either way, you will need to specifically address this problem in some fashion when you apply.

if you really don’t want a compromise in your application, work hard and get a satisfactory grade. if you don’t think you can even do that regardless of how hard you work, you should try to drop the class.

also, colleges generally don’t care about excuses except for serious personal/psychological problems.

switch out from that class as soon as possible!

You have to stay in the class, and you have to bring the grade up. There’s no other option that won’t look bad on an app. “That teacher hated me! He/she gave me a bad grade just because I kept giving wrong answers!” <— not impressive to adcoms.

Talk to the teacher on Monday, and ask how you could bring the grade up. Then do everything that he/she tells you to. Stay in touch with the teacher frequently throughout the semester – demonstrate that you care about this, and that you’re committed to doing whatever it takes.

Talk to the teacher. There is a possibility they may allow you to do a major extra credit project or research paper to bring that grade up, even after the semester is over.

like the people above said, you just have to get it up. try and get a tutor, schedule after school meetings with the teacher for help, ask another student whos doing well if they will give you assistance. dropping the class is giving up. i started off my AP Physics class with a 40% after i failed the first out of four tests in the semester. but i worked my butt off to get it up and thats what you gotta do.

Here is advice we got from our school at the beginning of the school year when my daughter wanted to take AP Calc after getting a not so great grade for Honors Pre Calc last year…Her counselor told her if she really wanted to take the AP class she could drop down to the regular calc class before Oct 1 without it showing up on her transcript. After Oct. 1 she could still drop down but it would show up on her transcript that she withdrew from AP and picked up the regular. The counselor thought that was a better option than sticking with the AP class and getting a poor grade. It would show to the College Admissions that she tried the AP, it was too much and made the decision to drop to the regular level in order to learn the material at a slower pace. Of course, Oct 1 came quickly and my daughter had only one test (on Oct 1). However, she was able to determine that she was understanding the concepts and keeping up with the rest of the class and she did get a B+ on that first test!

May depend on the type of colleges you are looking at. I think at a smaller LAC, the Admissions people will be looking for the “story” and may realize that you made the best decision to withdraw from the class if you were unsuccessful.

i just got 100 on the last test. nevermind!
