Loyola Marymount is an excellent suggestion. Less insanely competitive than USC or UCLA film schools, it still has the advantage of being in the creative hotbed of Los Angeles with the proximity to all the studios.

So we met with D’s GC this afternoon and he was great. He is going to call the admissions counselor as soon as grades are in for D’s 2nd quarter. He recommended that she not take SAT/ACT again; that she call the school and set up an interview and bring her art/photo portfolio. Her math teacher is going send a supplemental rec (she loves D and D has worked very hard in her class…math was her downfall on the SAT but she is getting an A in Trig/Calculus class). He also suggested that my other D (who is currently a student at Emerson) write a letter for her sister. Art instructor is sending a letter as well. D is also currently taking a Costuming class at a local theater and they are designing and constructing the costumes for The Wizard of Oz production. All of this info will be submitted so we are cautiously hopeful that she will be admitted to the school of her dreams.
Again…thank you all for your help. You are great!!

Yay! I think this is very likely to make the difference. Good luck, my fingers are crossed!

Well, and if she still doesn’t get in, then you can move on knowing that you pulled out all the stops.

I second Gwen’s post. Those are the kind of steps that got my D admitted after a deferment.

I hope those steps do the trick. If they don’t, nothing would. Good job.

Jillie: there you go; agree with the above; you’ve done all you could do now…good luck and let us know how it goes…

This sounds like a great plan and you and D will feel good that you did everything you could to convince Emerson this is a good fit.

Good luck, and I can’t wait to hear how it goes!

For film school. Mine did not apply as a freshman to USC film school. I did not know if she would receive her NMS that would enable her to attend USC without breaking my bank, nor did I know that she would choose film as one of her majors. As a result, I advised her not to put too much effort in applying for USC film school(I also did not know that film major was that competitive). She took a few film classes, had lunch with the film department head, and applied to transfer to the film school. All along, she kept very high GPA, high enough to go to law school/medical school(her back up plans) and she is now a double major and film is one of them.
D1 applied to CLAS and then transfer to the film school later. As long as your daughter keeps a good GPA she should be able to transfer to the film school later. Edit to add that all of D1’s ECs are film related.

So D called and spoke with her admission counselor for about 20 minutes…she thought the call went well. It also helped that he had just received her letter telling him how much she wants to go to Emerson and that if she is accepted she will definitely attend. She feels like her mid term exams went well so she hopes that week after next she can send him her second quarter grades with an improved GPA. She really has worked hard to show them that she is the kind of student that they want and that she would do well there. Again, thanks for all of your suggestions and encouragement!

Good luck! Sending positive vibes your way.

Thanks for the update! :)

Fingers crossed!

hmmm…im a terrible test taker too…last year i took the SATs twice and ACTs and got a 1680,1750 and 25…but that was because i didnt study and tested at the same time…i was also feeling doubtful about getting in…i took the december ACT in hopes for a higher score and worked off an ACT book to attack my weakness in english…i got a 29 on them and now it puts me at the top 75% of test takers at most competitive schools…im a big advocator for the ACTs and i think that you should get ur daughter to study off an ACT guide…it truly works…good luck to her
