Okay I know LSAT and gpa are be-all end-all, but does a Division I athlete at a US News top 25 academic school get any slack for only having a 3.5 and taking rigorous courses while training/competing 24 hours a week? LSAT is 168 and shooting for UT-Austin or Georgetown...

My sense is that it won’t give you as much of a boost as you’d think. Unfortunately, the raw GPA is all that matters to USNews, and consequently, it’s about all that matters to the law schools. Some adcomms may give you the benefit of the doubt grade-wise, especially since your GPA is at least decent, but in most cases, they’ll probably prefer a168/3.9 who did nothing but class and prelaw society at a no-name state school. Any chance you can break 170 on a retake?

What having been a D1 athlete WILL help you with is interviews once you get into law school. That may seem secondary now, but it’ll be huge come fall of your 2L year.

For what it’s worth, I was also a D1 athlete, but my numbers were even more extreme than yours (172/2.8ish as an engineering double-major). Texas and USC both dinged me, but I did get into Georgetown and a T10, at which I’m currently a 3L. Good luck!

bluedevil, did you attend a state school for undergrad?

No. I attended a top 10 private school. Which one is probably pretty obvious from my username :)

Lol, I should’ve guessed. I thought maybe that’s where you are now. My friend went there for law school and loved it.
