D1 Football

If UCSD had D1 football that created atmosphere and spirit on the campus do you think the school would becomes as popular (if not more) than Cal and UCLA?

Well you're talking about an huge chain of events here.. D1 Football would probably create a bit more of a spirited atmosphere, which would in turn have to ignite more spirit around campus. Keep in mind, however, that if everyone suddenly became more spirited and loved their teams, it wouldn't happen overnight, and it would take a little while for some fan-base to build up. D1 football would certainly help its popularity, but UCLA and Cal's popularity has been developed for so long, it would be decades before UCSD's sports popularity matched that. I mean, my mom went to UCLA and she screams at the TV when UCLA plays... the team has alot of history, alot of fan base, and a solid reputation. People GO to UCLA and Cal because they are smart and like the school spirit/sports... most of the people at UCSD are incredibly bright, and they like sports, but its not a huge deal to them... because if it was, they wouldn't be at that school to begin with. If sports was that important, they would have refused UCSD and gone elsewhere (or most likely, never have applied).

So if D1 football came about, it would take at least 10 years (most likely more) of history, of having a team that can play together and is worth talking about, of having coaches who work togther, to raise the school's popularity in sports. But keep in mind Cal and UCLA are HUGE in terms of sports, so UCSD would have quite a ways to go. There's not a chance that they would become more popular than Cal and UCLA (both much older schools).

Putting D1 football in a school would not magically revolutionize its popularity, heh heh. Although, this is not to say I'm not all for it. I think UCSD should absolutely have D1 sports, and if you want to revolutionize school spirit, you might as well start right now. But theres probably a reason its D2, which is most likely this: UCSD wants their students to focus on academics, not sports. D2 becoming D1 usually results from a huge fan-base to begin with in their sports, and the students wanting higher level competition (not necessarily true for UCSD). And D1 competition might be a bit out of UCSD's leauge though (no pun intended). I'm all for D1 though =)

davis is getting extremely popular they are going D1

They already are D1 at Davis.

isnt it a transition yr, they werent in d1 football were they?

if this were to happen, it would definitely help, if UCSD had division 1 basketball AND football, i think it'd be as popular if not more popular than the other uc's, because the area around ucsd is really nice.

don't you mean if ucsd had a football team?

I do hope some donors decides to really push UCSD for a football sometime in the future. Hopefully by that time some of us are out of grad school we'll have a team to cheer for.

I remember my tour guide saying that every 4-5 years, the students are surveyed on whether or not they want a football team, and the majority votes "no." He's an alum, so I give him some credibility.
If this is true, this just further validates the opinion that MOST people that go to UCSD aren't really sports fanatics. I agree with another poster (I don't remember which one since it was in a different thread) on the point that most students who choose to attend 'SD are more or less indifferent to Div. I sports. If it really mattered that much to people, why opt for 'SD then?

This doesn't mean that I'm opposed to our Tritons taking the Div. I route. I do think that we would receive more national recognition, and a lot more respect for the institution in general. IMHO, our academics already rival that of Cal's and UCLA's, which is impressive since we've only been around since 1960.
But If it does happen, it will take years to gain popularity, just as lvshorty said. I'd be an extremely proud alum, though. I love collegiate football and basketball, and I think it would be exciting if we were able to witness the era of UCSD's new football program. We won't be stellar right off the bat, but it would still be memorable nonetheless.

r u kidding me, y would people vote no. seriously ucsd has the best mascot i think, that triton dude looks cool, we need a football team.

Because of funding.

Football teams for schools like USC, because of insanely high interest in tickets, merchandise, commerical placements etc, their sports actually make money for the school. I really doubt that UCSD would see that sort of revenue (we'd likely lose money) for a long long time - we'd have to first get that 10 year 'history' all while winning for that period...

Students just don't see the point in spending some absurd sum for some spirit. There are better ways to distribute the funds.

man that would be sweeeet

and all those SD running backs will be able to stay closer to home AND bring national championships to SD

yeahhhhh...what if reggie bush had gone to UCSD lol

it would be more well known and popular than SC. imagine that...
