I grew up in Charlottesville and my Dad was a neuroscience professor at UVA for about 10 years. Does this count for anything close to a legacy? Should i mentioned it? How?

O and my mom took a few classes at UVA when she started going back to school to get her M.Ba. (Finished it at Georgia State). Could this be a legacy? Lol this might be a little but of wishfull thinking, but I really wan't to go to UVA and it's hard to get into OOS.

To be legacy, you had to have earned a degree at UVA. Since neither of your parents have done this, you're not a true legacy. However, you might get a bit of special consideration because of your father.

Jimmy, is the parent's M.D. from UVa? There's a difference between going to UVa Medical School and doing a residency in the UVa Medical System.

When it comes to parent information, the application asks for place of birth, address (if different from yours), occupation, and degrees earned. It won't ask for any sort of employment history.

My stepfather is an alum. Where do I mention this in the application? Should I provide his info in place of my biological father's? (To the best of my memory, the app. does not ask for info concerning step parents.)

Chessie, this is one of those things you have to be a little creative about. I've seen students put the stepfather info next to their mother's info, I've seen them put it next to their father's info, I've seen them add it in the siblings box (which is open text), and I've seen them write a note to go with the application to give us the extra info.

I think you'll be fine doing any of those things.

Dean J,
My Dad did not get his MD from UVA, nor did he do his residency training at UVA. He trained at an equally prestigious university up north and has a nice diploma framed document with the years of training/specialty and such. I asked because I was curious as to how the adcom at UVA and other universities look at that aspect of legacy consideration. As always, thanks for being here and answering questions!
