I am looking to apply to some of the best schools in the country, though some may be far reach schools. The thing is, i have a B. A B+ to be more specific: in the second semester of freshman year Honors Comprehensive Science. Other than that I have straight A's, I've taken all Honors classes available and I will be taking all but one of the AP classes (scheduling overlap). I've heard from some of my friends that simply having a B will forever shut you out of the ivy league and other prestigious schools like Duke and Stanford (my dream school). Is this true? My ACT and SAT scores will be good enough and I plan to write a rockin essay. I would hate to be damned by a B.

No. One B will not kill you. However, despite the fact that you are a stellar applicant, you may not get into your dream school simply because there are so many perfect applicants.

Honestly, I just want to say to you right now “Shut up you pretentious little brat.” Anyways, if you do end up being rejected by the “best schools in the country,” it won’t be because of one little B. If you end up being accepted, then you know that B+ really didn’t mean anything.

There is a 99.99% chance that this B+ won’t be the deciding factor. If there is just one more spot left and there is another applicant of identical caliber to you (including the quality of the essays) but he/she got the A-, then, yes, that would probably be the case, but that is so unlikely that there’s really no point worrying about it. Focus on your EC’s, great EC’s will trump grades anyday.

Sorry for sounding pretentious, I just have the world’s worst guidance department at my high school (as evidenced by my need to solicit answers from total strangers online) and so I am trying to figure out the admissions process completely on my own. I appreciate all of your reassurance.

It’s not going to be huge on you. Calm down…
Your being a brat.
