The search is on for a new Handsome Dan:

This might be a good time to consider switching to a more intelligent breed - like a poodle or - even better - a border collie.

^ is that supposed to be funny? ^

I <3 Handsome Dan!

Aww, that's nothing. Check out Byerly's oh-so-sweet posts in the thread when the last Handsome Dan died: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=29376&highlight=handsome. The man's all heart.

Tigers live longer :)

This might be a good time for you to consider staying out of the Yale forum. :)

Bulldogs > Cantabs

Oh, and I like the acting Handsome Dan XVI - he was great at Bulldog Days. :)

At least THIS kind of Princeton tiger lives longer!

This is an example of what I mean; politically incorrect, perhaps, but at least its not a real animal paraded on a leash (like all the Dans) but, rather, a college kid dressed up in a tiger suit.

If he want to get all sweaty and itchy inside that costume - well, at least he's doing it of his own free will.!

I don't know any dog owners that don't walk their dogs on leashes.

George Bush doesn't.

And Bill Clinton doesn't either.

And here's Jerry Ford walking Liberty at Camp David. Note ..... NO LEASH!

All Yale guys who didn't use leashes!

Those images look kind of Photoshop-ed.

;)

I'm kidding.

I liked the inflatable Bulldog. It was nice.

I don't know George Bush, Bill Clinton, or Gerald Ford. ;)

The AP covered this:
http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/national/AP-Yale-Bulldog.html?

my favorite quote:

Previous Handsome Dans have created quite a legacy: One inspired a Cole Porter song. Another graced the cover of Sports Illustrated. Nearly all have hobnobbed with politicians. One performed for President George H.W. Bush, a Yale alum, playing dead at the question, ''Would you rather go to Harvard or die?''

Mugsy outperformed nine other would-be mascots Tuesday in a competition that had the dogs strut in front of a blaring band, tackle a stuffed Princeton tiger, and maul a Harvard crimson blanket.

Some were ruled too chubby. Others too timid. A panel of judges found Mugsy athletic enough to carry one of the most storied monikers in sports.

''It's folklore. It's pride. It's tradition,'' said Roy E. Yarbrough, a school mascot historian in Pennsylvania. ''Yale has a leg up on everybody.'"

I kinda chuckled at the thought of some sort of deranged dog show where the contestants are judged on how ferociously they tear apart a stuffed cantab. haha

A "school mascot historian"??? Talk about your sub-specialties.

Chewing on stuff, remaining oblivious to his surroundings, and playing dead. Three "tricks" the typically dim bulldog can generally handle!

The History of My Favorite, Dan I

He was always taken to games on a leash, and the Harvard football team for years owed its continued existence to the fact that the rope held." The Philadelphia Press recalled that "a favorite trick was to tell him to 'Speak to Harvard.' He would bark ferociously and work himself into physical contortions of rage never before dreamed of by a dog.

Just think Byerly, what would have happened to you if the rope hadn't held. ;)

The playing dead trick was pretty clever though.

Does anyone know if Mugsy was the acting Handsome Dan XVI before this week - the one we saw at Bulldog Days? I know Dean Shaw said the acting Dan XVI was one of the finalists for the actual position...

Has Dan XV been stuffed and mounted yet? I always wondered what they actually stuff them with - sawdust? old rags??

The acting dog at bulldog days was named Rambo, and was one of the finalists but not the one that was chosen eventually. I liked Rambo. I got to pet him and he responded quite nicely. But apparently I was one of the exceptions and that he wasn't as social as Handsome Dan should be.
