Dance 2021-2022

Thanks. Do you have any idea what the core curriculum at Peabody is? From my understanding that is mostly taken at homewood & I’m curious how easy it is to travel between the two campuses.

Not sure how extensive it is, but I heard a double major would need 5 years.

A great non-audition school for theatre and dance is Muhlenberg in Pennsylvania.

Hi, thank you. I realize that I wasn’t clear in my post. D has been accepted at both Peabody & Chapman. She also applied and got into two schools with dance/theatre programs but not audition process. Though for one she did audition and earn a talent scholarship. I was wondering what people’s thoughts were on the two audition programs. Plus what they thought of going to a school without an audition process, especially since my D is interested in trying other types of performance and wants a strong humanities curriculum.

A non-audition BA program is a great fit for plenty of students, especially those who have wide-ranging interests and want to explore different things. I don’t know much about Chapman, but Peabody is a high-credit BFA so there won’t be much room for coursework and activities outside of dance.

It depends somewhat on her goals–professional dancer? Probably a BFA then, depending on what her other choices are.

Anyone finally hear from Purchase? Or are you having your daughters or sons email admissions at this point? This is really very long to wait when decisions need to made… and this is one of my daughters last schools to hear from to make a decision.

Purchase is rolling admissions so they keep sending acceptances gradually. I spoke just now via Zoom with someone from Purchase Admissions. She recommended emailing your student’s assigned counselor to let them know you are anxiously awaiting. The admissions zoom is open until 3 p.m. today for questions. Go to the admissions page on the Purchase website.

Oh good thank you for the info. My daughter actually wound up emailing her counselor earlier today. So very good to know she did the right thing in sending the email to the right department.

Can someone tell me if USC, UCLA, NYU, Princeton, Columbia allow a double major with dance? Also, if you apply to dance and are not selected, will you be considered for your second major? I think some schools do not consider you for second major, if dance is your first choice.

I don’t think you can major in dance at Princeton, it’s a certificate program outside the major. Columbia also doesn’t offer a dance major, but it has a great dance program through its affiliation with Barnard. NYU does not allow a double-major; UCLA definitely does. Not sure about USC.

Just putting out there that these are VERY different options for a dance major. USC and NYU are two of the most competitive dance programs in the country, and require going through a very selective admissions process. Princeton and Columbia, while very competitive academically, obviously don’t require an audition since they don’t offer the major. UCLA does require an audition but is much less selective for dance than NYU or USC.

Thank you. We are just starting the process of looking at schools with dance majors for my current sophomore. Since she would ideally like to major in dance alongside business or psychology or other, I wanted to first see if schools even allow this. I am also curious if schools look at you for your second choice major if dance is your first major and you don’t get selected. I know dance s very competitive major.

What kind of dance major is she looking for? BA? BFA? Is she training for a professional dance career? In what kind of dance?

The most intensive BFA programs often don’t leave much room for a double-major because the major requires so many credits. Some don’t allow the option; others support it but it can take more than 4 years.

Some BFA programs off the top of my head that seem to be a good fit if you are looking for a place to double-major would be Indiana (classical ballet anyway–not sure about contemporary), Southern Methodist, Texas Christian, and Temple.

BA programs in general will leave more room for a double-major. There are lots of options and many do not require an audition.

I think schools vary in how easy it is to switch to another major; I’d ask individually.

She is only a sophomore, so she doesn’t know yet. But, she trains 25+ hours a week. So, she definitely has a passion for dance. She is mostly a contemporary dancer, but trains in multiple styles. She will need to explore possibilities.

Good luck!!
