Dance auditions and decisions 2017/18

@SCMHAALUM congratulations to your son on making a difficult decision. Good Luck to him as he moves forward in the fall!

Congratulations to all of you to have survived this application/audition season and made it to the other side!

Woohoo, we just got the news that D18 has been awarded the full ride Eccles academic scholarship at Utah that she had been waitlisted for in March. She was right on the bubble in terms of how far down the waitlist they were expected to go, so we hadn’t had any expectations that it would work out.

Now she’ll have to drop her suitemates from the room selection back in March. However, she doesn’t feel bad because 2 of the other 3 girls had already changed their mind and decided to go elsewhere, which is the problem with allocating rooms that early.

Look forward to continuing to hear how it goes for everyone next year!

@Twoin18 Wow congrats! Free education and dance training! What are you going to do with the money you saved for her :))

Pay for pointe shoes :))

@dudedrum Congrats on his choice of Fordham/Ailey! I’m sure he won’t regret his decision. My daughter still has hopes that she might get a call from the waitlist…she loves their program!

@scmhaalum Congrats on Stanford! To get in there is quite an accomplishment - must have had crazy good GPA. You must be very proud! What is he going to major in? My D briefly looked at Stanford but they only had a dance minor, so she never pursued it.

@Twoin18 Congrats on the scholarship! That must be the icing on the cake for you! Now you can buy her a car for graduation =D>

@Pusheen1 Thank you! My son wants to either dance or work with dancers if he cannot be a professional dancer. Biology is his major. Stanford doesn’t have dance major, which is why he delayed till the last minute to commit. He was able to connect with Alex K. who teaches advanced dance classes at Stanford. Alex is one of the founders at SF Conservatory and my son admires his work. He’s planning to continue training outside of school in SF.

@SCMHAALUM You’ve heard that the SF Conservatory is closing after the summer intensive? My daughter is at Academy of Ballet with Zory Karah and Richard Gibson. It has a preprofessional program with a few post-high school dancers as well as a robust adult program with 6 levels. My daughter may also be able to recommend her favorite teachers at Lines and ODC if it’s helpful.

What??? SFC is closing? Why?

@24bunheadmom20 No I haven’t heard about SF Conservatory. My son attended the Lines summer program last year and is pretty familiar with the teachers there, but yes please recommend teachers at ODC. Thank you for the info!

Thank you all for your guidance and input. Really helped me grasp the differences in the programs better. Ultimately my D decided on UCLA. Although some of the others were BFA’s, when it came down to it she just couldn’t see herself on those other campuses and really wanted the more urban NY or LA campus. We talked more about what type of program it was and the fact it wasn’t a BFA that would train her like Ailey and others, but she was ultimately ok with that. She had fully researched the program, classes, faculty, etc. and decided it would develop her more as an artist and choreographer (which she is also interested in). So she is going in with full understanding of her choice, so I felt better about that. It wasn’t where I thought we’d end up 6 months ago at all (I thought for sure somewhere in NYC), but faced with the choices she had this felt like the best choice. And it was a good choice for her to do a minor as well (with the strongest academics). So UCLA it is! At least for now…that may change if she gets a shot at getting off the wait list!

@Pusheen1 Congratulations to your daughter on really researching her options and making a choice! Good luck to her next year:)

@Pusheen1 Congrats on the decision! Sounds like a great fit for your daughter. Plus can’t beat the distance and in-state tuition!

Congrats @Pusheen1. My S18 is really looking forward to attending UCLA as well. Everyone we know who goes there seems so happy about their decision and UCLA has become so much more popular vs Berkeley at our NorCal school.

As a UCLA alum myself, I’m sure she’ll love it @Pusheen1 !

Has anyone heard any updates from waitlists, for those of you that are still hoping to get a spot from the waitlist somewhere?

@Pusheen1 Daughter has a friend who was accepted from the Point Park waitlist. She is also on the waitlist at Ailey/Fordham and has not heard anything.

One of my son’s friends was accepted from the USC wait list. My son is still waiting.

My daughter just got released from the Columbia waitlist, so that is over. Still no word from Fordham/Ailey about the waitlist.

So, any summer updates? What are your dancers doing over the summer? My daughter is still in school, though grades closed yesterday. They don’t graduate until the 15th (we live in Philly and they could not get the facility on the date that they wanted) so the kids are stuck in class with nothing to do. My daughter will be doing a paid internship for 25 hours a week. She is not attending a SI this summer, but will do one week workshops (scheduled in the late afternoon) and drop in classes to stay in shape.

She has her orientation on June 28/29th. She was lucky enough to connect with 2 other dancers who will be in the Honors College and is looking forward to meeting them and her new roommate at orientation. Then lots of swim club and weekends at the beach. Trying to fit in a short vacation after the internship but before move in day.
