@amom2girls My daughter is waiting to hear from Rutgers about Honors College and merit aid–already accepted for dance and academically. We are also out of state, so some merit aid would make the option more intriguing. Would you be willing to share your daughter’s academic stats?–private message is fine if you prefer. Thank you!
My daughter was just accepted at SUNY Purchase for dance. We are out of state and heard they don’t offer much in scholarships since tuition is pretty low to begin with. Does anyone know about how much they might offer? She was also accepted to Point Park and received both academic and artistic scholarships which was pretty generous. Trying to weigh things out to visit schools. We are still waiting to hear from Cal Arts and UCI. Those would be in state for us so tuition would probably be less since we qualify for cal grants.
My DD applied & auditioned at 6 schools. It has come down to a decision between TCU & U of So Carolina for her. Anyone have insight on either of these dance programs? She loves both campuses. Still waiting to hear about scholarship money at UofSC, but generous package from TCU. Congrats to all of you whose kids will be dance majors in the fall!
@calypte please feel free to message me!
@amom2girls My daughter received an invitation to the Honors College for Mason Gross today. Scholarship info should be available in a week according to the portal. I haven’t quite hit the 15 post minimum required to send direct messages. I can respond to messages though–if you send me a quick note I’ll write back with questions
@calypte congratulations to your daughter! Is Rutgers on her short list? Let’s get you up to 15 posts;)
@calypte awesome news! Congratulation to your D!
Hello! Have any dancers auditioned for the UNCSA dance program? It is the last audition we are waiting to hear!
@NewMexMama UofSC is one of my top choices as well! Congrats to your daughter and good luck! It’s a stressful yet exciting process!
@amom2girls I wish there was a shortlist! She is definitely considering Rutgers, but she has a lot of great options so far (Point Park, UNCSA, UofArts, BoCo, Ohio State, Peabody) and we are still waiting on a few. She doesn’t want to eliminate any until she has merit aid info, so we will likely be undecided until May 1.
Hello. Just stumbled on this site. Need some advice. Daughter auditioned at Elon, Butler, SUNY Purchase and Oklahoma. Accepted to SUNY and Elon. OK is her first choice and she was waitlisted. She has another opportunity to audition again in 2 weeks (she only auditioned for Ballet but is considering doing the Modern audition). She is crushed that she was wait listed. Any ideas on if a 2nd audition will help? Also would be interested in finding out how many wait listed dancers make it into the program.
@IKJ have her audition again if it’s possible, especially if she was waitlisted and not flat out rejected. When my daughter auditioned at OU the faculty talked about a girl who auditioned more than once and was ultimately accepted. (Butler actively discouraged reauditioning, for what it’s worth, and that was my daughter’s top choice.)
Thank you so much! I will.
You’re welcome. What’s the worst that can happen, right? Good luck to your daughter!
@calypte My daughter also waited until the very end to make a decision. We insisted on a variety of programs and schools so she would have options when it was time to decide. She did opt out of conservatory programs right before auditions. I was happy to have a long list narrowed down, even if just a little;)
@IKJ My daughter auditioned twice for both Oklahoma and Utah last year. She got into Oklahoma modern but not ballet, and didn’t get into ballet the second time around either. But she did get accepted at Utah (ballet) after being waitlisted in the initial audition. And you can certainly get different results from the modern and ballet auditions, particularly as ballet is usually a tougher admit.
@IKJ - My daughter auditioned twice at OU and was ultimately offered a spot as a Modern major. What is nice about OU is that they are one of the few schools who offer feedback from the audition. So if your daughter can ask for feedback and then hopefully show improvement in the second audition, hopefully they will move her from waitlist to full acceptance. Plus she will certainly show that she is very interested in attending there. Good Luck to her! My daughter loved the school & campus - and they have an amazing dance program.
Hi! Is the Mason Gross program strictly modern and ballet? My daughter is hoping for a program that offers more contemporary as well as jazz and hip hop. Anything you can share about the program (training, performance opportunities, opportunities after graduation, etc) would be helpful!
@MTgirlie, my daughter has ballet 4 days a week. I forget what they have on Friday morning. She is taking pointe as an elective this semester. I know that Jazz is also an elective. But I’d say that the program is contemporary/modern focused. My daughter can’t hip-hop to save her life, so that is not a class that she would pay attention to, lol;)
She was able to audition for repertory pieces last fall and was one of the few freshman to earn a spot, so the opportunity is there. They also auditioned for student and MFA pieces. She was offered 12 spots, which was lovely, but she obviously could not take advantage of.
She is second semester freshman, so she is not very aware of the seniors and where they are going.
I like that the department has a dedicated PT and a pilates instructor/room. For instance, she landed badly during a class on Monday and the department makes an appointment at the health center (they get them right in). Her big toe is sprained, so they dance dept. got her schedule and excused her from all classes, even the academic. If she needs PT they will slot her right in. Some programs that we looked at shared a PT with sports teams, or the students had to look after their own injuries. We liked that Rutgers treated the dance department professionally.
Most of the first year dancers live on the Mason/Gross campus, which makes their dance life easy. She lives in the Honors College, which is on the College Ave/main campus and has to take the shuttle to dance.
Hi everyone! I wanted to thank you all for the info on this post. There isn’t a ton of info on dance programs so it’s nice to have some questions answered. My D is waiting on Fordham, NYU, Pace, and point park. This is agony having to wait this long. Good luck to all of your children!!
