I'm really interested in joining a jazz or hip hop group (or maybe both). I know there are a lot of groups, but in general when are auditions and what are they like? Are you taught a routine that you then have to perform or do you have to come in with your own routine? If anyone can answer for specific groups that would be helpful too.

augh i just wrote a long response and now it got deleted. blah.

First of all, every performance group will take up at the VERY least 6 hours per week of rehearsal. This doesn't include performances, meetings, dress rehearsals, choreography (if you choose to), etc. It's a huge time commitment and I don't recommended doing more than one unless you are sure you can sacrifice the time and energy to groups. Take it from my personal frosh experience.

All dance auditions are similar, whether for a college dance group or a professional one.

huge group warmup -- not judged

huge group choreo learning -- not judged

small group "performance" -- judged

small group freestyle "performance" -- judged

3 and #4 will be undoubtedly recorded on video.

4 can either be a routine you made up or a spontaneous freestyle vibing.

It's generally a good time and will take about 3-4 hours of your time.

After this general audition, you may or may not be contacted for callbacks, where you will basically do the same thing, only this time individually or maybe in a pair. This is generally when the freestyle or original routine will count for more because you'll get more attention and can really show off what sets you apart.

Good luck, and have fun!

just for the record, i know several girls who did more than one dance group. i about 3 that did urban styles and were stanford dollies and did another group.

i'm sure their schedule was packed though

here are the sites for stanford student dance groups http://www.stanford.edu/dept/dance/groups/

dollies don't audition til winter quarter or after i think

I think I know of the girls you are referring to. Urban Styles is where a lot of Stanford dollies go after finishing their time as dollies. You can definitely do more than one, but you will mostly likely find it more difficult to choreograph within a group because your time will be split.

Sorry, that's what I meant to say! I don't like halfassing participation in my groups, so not being able to choreograph bothered me. If you don't plan on really taking a leadership role or choreographing, though, joining more than one group will be fine. :)

Dollies audition in Spring quarter, I believe.
