Dance in MT Program?

Otterbein’s MT program is one of my daughter’s choices. I’ve been looking at some of the YouTube videos of productions. I’m curious about how much dance the MT students get because the productions I’ve seen on YouTube seem to be lacking a lot of dance. And, of the triple threats, my daughter needs the dance.

Also made me wonder when I saw MT and MT-Dance majors. Why the differentiation?

Any one know?

Thanks.

Others could comment better than I, but I can at least offer what I know from one son as a grad there in 2010, and another who just auditioned a few weeks ago and got a lot of info. The BFA itself offers strenuous dance, the dance concentration simply affords those stronger in dance the much advanced training and additional hours. Right now, I believe all freshman dance every day with greater focus on ballet as the foundation, but all - jazz, tap, etc are covered in the four years. Students can continue to have dance every day - something you don’t find at all schools. I believe my older son would say he advanced the most in dance due to Otterbein. Several of his classmates are involved in tours, cruise jobs, etc. that require strong dance. One is currently touring in West Side Story and is definitely using his excellent dance skills. Our younger son going through the audition process is technically a stronger dancer already than his brother was in high school. All of the schools he’s considering must be strong in dance, which is why Otterbein is high on his list. He, also, wants to really develop his dance. It is a school that tackles all facets seriously - acting, dance, and voice.

FYI - most of Otterbein’s shows are not on YouTube - even as clips, including their annual dance concert which showcases that training. If you would like to message me I can point you in the direction of some available examples.

That really helps. Good to hear they have a good dance discipline.

I know there is a separate thread about auditioning but it is really old - I was wondering if anyone could talk me through the dance section of the audition for Otterbein. For both the regular BFA and the dance concentration one, could you tell me the level of difficulty required (ie typical technique demonstrated - jazz walks, pirouettes, jetes) and what else they had to do (ie jazz, ballet or tap combinations)?? If someone could answer for either or or both that would be absolutely fantastic!

At the Unifieds last year they did not require any dance.

My S auditioned for Otterbein at Chicago and told them he was very interested in singing, acting and dancing…they had him do ballet after his singing and acting audition. They just announced several combinations and he did it for them.:)
