Otterbein--Strongly recommending Theatre/Dance

In short, I suggest Otterbein for theatre/dance majors. I am a musical theatre freshman and would be happy to answer questions and provide any help to anyone looking into an MT, Acting, or Theatre major even if not at Otterbein!
Good luck and keep in touch!

Anyone who has spent any time on this forum would also suggest Otterbein. Doctorjohn is a smart and generous participant who has helped me and so many others. I believe Otterbein is absolutely blessed to have him there and know it must be a very special place.

my mom is checking out otterbein tomorrow (she was visiting my sister @ OSU), and i'm really excited to hear what she thinks!!! all the contact i've had with otterbein has been great, and i've been told i'll get an incredible financial aid package. too bad they only accept 8, huh?

I wish I could get in there haha.

Sporti,
Yes, they typically admit 8 for MT, but there are 10 freshman MTs this year. The Acting major also provides a similar training to MT--one is still eligible for choirs, private voice, and mainstage musicals.

can the acting majors take the same dance classes as the MTs? also, can they take voice with the MT voice teachers?

thanks, linus!! you're really helping me out!

im looking to apply to otterbein, but i was wondering, if you do a MT major, does the school of theatre and dance, allow you to minor or major in another program outside of the theatre and dance school?

thanks

I hope that Linus won't mind me answering. Yes, Sporti, acting majors can take the same dance classes as the MT's, and they can study voice with the same teachers who teach the MT's. In fact, we require acting majors to take ballet, modern, jazz and tap, and to take two years of either class voice or private voice lessons.

Kaylagurl, MT majors really can't take another major or even a minor. The requirements for the BFA equal 127 hours of the 180 required for graduation. The remaining 53 hours are taken up with 50 hours of Integrated Studies (liberal arts) and 3 hours of physical education. Acting majors, because they have somewhat fewer requirements, can occasionally do a minor in another field, but another major is just not possible. What were you hoping to do?

oh, i just thought of this, too.

there's the MT/dance minor, and then just MT. if you're not a dance minor, do you still get a fair amount of dance? what are the dance requirements without the dance minor?

thanks doctorjohn -- you've been a huge help with me and my interest in otterbein...i can't wait to audition!

Actually, Sporti, the degree is Musical Theatre with a Concentration in Dance, not a Dance Minor. But the dance requirements are similar. MT/D's are expected to be able to start school at the intermediate level or above in ballet, modern, jazz and tap, and they're required to take dance five days/week for all four years.

But the other MT's also receive considerable dance training. If they haven't had much dance, they start with basic classes. Once they master the basics, they are required to take Intermediate dance for a year. Most of our MT's end up dancing for all four years.

Hope this helps.

CollegeMom: Should this conversation be moved to the Otterbein thread?

DoctorJohn, I agree....this thread would be most useful on the Otterbein Sub Forum where readers seek any information or experiences about Otterbein. So, I am going to move it there.

hey, thank you, i was just curious, cause i know that there are not that many schools that allow that..im still applying though :-)....thank you :-)

Doctorjohn, The only reason my d is applying to Otterbein is because of your passion for your school. Will you be at UCLA College Fair Oct 29th? She would like to meet and talk to you.

BTW was that 42Street in the Otterbein Catalog

LocoMom:

Wish I could be. I grew up in LA, and did my Ph.D. at UCLA, so it would be fun to go home for their college fair. However, we open Tartuffe on November 1, and I suspect the cast would like me to be around for dress rehearsals. ;)

I will be in LA for the unified auditions on February 11, and would be happy to see your d then. Is she planning on attending the unifieds?

The picture couldn't be 42nd Street because the catalog is two years old--we publish it every other year--and we did the play last spring. I'll check the catalog when I get to school and let you know.

doctorjohn;

You will indeed be seeing my d in L.A. I'll escort her if she wants me to. I hope so. I'm going to miss the Mom job so.

LocoMom:

I miss the Dad role, too, although we had both boys (well, young men--they're 24 and 26) home last weekend for the holiday. First time we've been together since the younger one was married a year ago December.

I couldn't find a photograph in the catalog, so I went searching on-line, and I suspect you're referring to a photo on the web, on the "Auditions and Awards" page. Indeed, that picture is of our production of 42nd Street last spring. It shows Peggy (Selina, a sophomore from San Antonio) and Billy (David, a sophomore from Miami). The show was supervised by Randy Skinner, choreographed by Kelli Barclay and directed by Tripp Phillips, Randy's PSM for all the 42nd Street productions. Our kids had a great time with them.

We also got the new admissions brochure (with application inside) last week - and I'm pretty sure that is a picture from 42nd Street (we saw a rehearsal and remember the actors). This must be the most recent brochure/catalog with updated pictures.

Doctorjohn, My son(22) will be home in a few minutes(from U of A) for a long weekend and Yom Kippur. Both my babies under one roof. Happy Mom.

Early rise to work on gettng her auditions straight. Then a day with my boy.
