Dance program w/great training that still leaves room for other pursuits

Hello, my DD is a rising senior who ate, breathed and slept dance until this year. She has cut way back on dance training and discovered there is more to life, including the discovery that she is a talented artist. At present, she is still wanting to major in dance with a choreography emphasis, but not be SO consumed with dance that she can’t pursue art as well. She does not wish to be a professional dancer post college, but she would be v unhappy in a program that didn’t challenge her at all. Thoughts?

You can think about a BA instead of a BFA. James Madison has a nice program with a BA in dance. VCU has a
BFA with a choreography focus and they are meant to have a good art program. She could finds a school with a strong minor, like Wake Forest. Maybe a LAC with a strong dance program like Skidmore or Goucher.

I don’t know how strong dance is at Bard, but they seem to do a nice job of coupling excellent academics with great arts.

Some other places off the top of my head would be Mount Holyoke, Sarah Lawrence, Duke, Eugene Lang/New School.

VCU is a BFA and seems pretty intensive. There are sample schedules posted on their website.

I suggest looking at Connecticut College , which has an excellent dance program and promotes interdisciplinary study/ double majors. Also Bates, Skidmore, Bard, Umass Amherst, George Mason, Elon, all have solid dance majors

Definitely Skidmore for dance and art!

Thank you. Now I just need to rob a bank

I second the suggestion of looking at a BA rather than a BFA.
