I was wondering, what types of dance do they offer at UCLA for extracurriculars or electives? Do they have jazz, tap, hip hop...and how would you rate the intensity of the classes. Would you recommend just taking classes at a dance studio instead of on campus? Thanks for your help.

I've been looking into it and there are TONS of opportunities to do dance on campus (and off I'm sure.) There are a bunch of cultural dance groups like the RAAS team (Indian dance competition team) or Hindi Film Dance (Indian dance club, not team--site says no experience necessary) Chinese Cultural Dance (you don't have to be Chinese, no experience required,) and a Hip Hop dance club as well (which I hear is super, super intense and awesome, requires a big time committment, and at least for me, it'd be too hard haha.) Since there are literally a million on-campus clubs, I'm sure there are a bunch of dance groups that I don't even know about and will only be able to find out once school starts.

There's the Spirit Squad dance team, which I assume is really intense becuase there are only 9 members and I hear something like 200 try out. They perform at home games and travel as well. I've seen them on TV and they are AMAZING! Their routines combine all forms of contemporary dance and I think to even try out, you have to have a lot of experience, flexibility, perfected technique etc...to begin with.

There's another dance team too, but it's separate from the Spirit Squad. Instead of being mainly a performance squad that has somewhat of a cheerleading element and does stuff at games and whatnot, this one is an actual competition team that travels to compete with other college dance squads etc... but i'm not really sure.

I also learned that UCLA has a recreation program thing that offers dance classes in all levels. Because UCLA is in as great a city as Los Angeles, I'm sure you'll find plenty of places/studios off campus to take classes if that's what you want.

Elective wise, I have no clue. From my understanding, there's no minor offered in dance, and you have to audition to be in the World Arts and Cultures major...but maybe they still offer classes in various fields of dance. who knows.

SOMEBODY's been doin her homework ;)

haha, wow thanks pixiedanzer! Are you gonna join any of these dance groups also? I'm thinking about doing the hip hop one (what's the club called?) and maybe just take jazz and tap off campus, not sure yet but all i know is that i'm gonna be dancing in college!

I'm only familiar with several dance groups affiliated with culture clubs, but here's my input:

Association of Chinese Americans (ACA): they field a competitive hip hop team, and they have traditional chinese cultural dance. the hip hop team requires tryout and a lot of practice time, and they compete and also get to perform in royce hall during the Chinese American Cultural Night show. the traditional chinese cultural dance also gets to perform at royce hall for the same occassion. although this isn't particularly "dance" persay, they also have a Lion Dance team.

Nikkei Student Union (NSU): also fields a competitive hip hop team that requires tryout and a lot of practice time. they compete and also perform at royce hall during the NSU Culture Show. NSU also has traditional japanese cultural dance called odori, and they also get to perform at royce hall for the same occassion.

Samahang Philipino also fields a hip hop team.

Indian Student Union also has cultural dance teams for their culture show.

Thai Smakom also has cultural dance teams for their culture show.

ok... I suspect any culture club that puts on their own culture show (almost all of them) have their own cultural dance groups. hip hop teams are normally limited to the more popular/bigger clubs.

anybody from any ethnicity can join any of the clubs and their dance teams.

there's also many dance classes offered through wooden, but i don't have specific knowledge of this.

kitkat i definitely plan to keep dancing just as a hobby though, not intensely or anything. my interests are lyrical, jazz, and ballet.

according to kfc4u, there is more than one hip hop club so I'm sure you'll have plenty to choose from :)

as far as groups go, i'm not Indian, but I'm interested in learning Indian dance! So i want to join the Hindi Film Dance Club.
