[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calculus BC, AP US Gov’t, AP MacroEcon, AP Physics C: Mech. & E&M, AP English Lit, Honors Math Seminar
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None[/ul]
[/li]

Subjective:

[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Student-run international math league (co-director), Model UN (Founder), REACH peer helping (president), Mu Alpha Theta (Vice President), Quiz Bowl (Captain), Math Team, Latin Club, NHS.
[] Job/Work Experience: 12 hours/week at restaurant, 3 hours/week tutoring
[] Volunteer/Community service: ~70 hours planning summer activities for kids at botanical garden
[] Summer Activities: Nothing that was worth putting in my application.
[] Essays: CommonApp: Really liked this one. Chose the topic about becoming an adult and wrote about work. Definitely would give this one at least 9/10. Supplement: Wrote about the above-mentioned math league and how we got cheated by some guy who made up a school to take awards and what I learned from it. Kinda generic. 6/10 maybe?
[] Teacher Recommendation: One from my Calculus teacher who loves me and I’ve worked really closely with over the years. 9/10. One from my physics teacher who likes me well enough but may not know me as well. 7/10.
[] Counselor Rec: Probably generic, but, again, she likes me, so maybe 6/10?
[] Additional Rec: Peer rec from a very close friend who is a very talented writer. Hopefully this translates to a good recommendation, but it would be safe to say at least 8/10
[] Interview: N/A
[] Supplementary Material: N/A [/ul]

Other

[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Alabama
[] School Type: Large Public. Somewhat competitive.
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): ~$140,000/year
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None, unless being from Alabama?[/ul]

Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: Test Scores, some ECs, CommonApp essay
[] Weaknesses: Other than math league stuff, not really any major ECs that grabbed any attention. Some generic recs maybe?
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I applied for Engineering, which isn’t really something that I think a lot of people apply to Dart for, so that might have helped. I think the strengths and weaknesses answer this pretty well, though.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: University of Alabama, Auburn, Tulane. Deferred EA: Case Western Reserve. Still waiting: Rice, Brown, Vanderbilt [/ul].

**General Comments: I really wasn’t even expecting to get accepted, much less a likely letter. Good luck to those still waiting! **

Subjective:

[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Ski Racing (my main extracurricular), bike racing, violin
[] Job/Work Experience: Bike Coach
[] Volunteer/Community service: Very little 10ish hours (did some with the ski team but thats about it)
[] Summer Activities: Ski camps, Bike races, Backpacking, Some online classes to open up the winter schedule
[] Essays: Incredible, took me a 2 months to write. (written direct but creatively with no metaphorical stuff which officers tend to dislike)
[] Teacher Recommendation: Probably good. Knew both teachers well.
[] Counselor Rec: Probably fantastic
[] Additional Rec: My peer rec was probably a 10/10 and I also got a rec from the former director of the US Ski Team.
[] Interview: Really good
[] Supplementary Material:Violin supplement and photography supplement[/ul]

Other

  • [] State (if domestic applicant): UT
[] School Type: Medium Public (Park City High School)
    [] Ethnicity:Caucasian
    [] Gender:Male
[] Income Bracket (mention if FA candidate): 150-200
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Semi-unique geography

Reflection

  • [] Strengths: Extracurriculars (I don’t have many but what I do have I am very involved in), and recommendations (especially the additional one)
[] Weaknesses: Relatively speaking academics, but not when you figure in my schedule for skiing. I explained this to admissions in a follow up email after being deferred early admission. Community service was weak though
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was not a recruited athlete for those wondering. I made sure that every aspect of my personality was covered. With skiing, violin, photography, good academics, and well crafted essays, I didn’t have any standout categories but was very well rounded. I also stayed in good contact with Dartmouth and developed a good relationship with my regional officer via email
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to RPI but thats it for now

General Comments: Good luck to you all and hopefully Dartmouth doesn’t pull any pranks this coming april fools day

    [] Job/Work Experience: lifeguard
[] Volunteer/Community service: Lots of food bank related stuff and I teach cooking classes
[] Summer Activities: Travel and constitution team preparation. Nothing really significant
[] Essays: They were phenomenal and were certainly one of my application’s strengths. I wrote about food for the common app.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Both were probably very strong but I didn’t read them.
[] Counselor Rec: Probably generic. He works with more than 350 students
[] Additional Rec: Peer rec was really well written and emphasized why I would be a good fit for Dartmouth.
[] Interview: I was never contacted
    [] Supplementary Material:

Reflection:

  • [] Strengths: Essays, “We the People” (my school won the national championship last year), well-rounded
    [] Weaknesses: No major hooks
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Considering I received a likely letter after being deferred, I have absolutely no idea. Perhaps yield considerations.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: UVa, waiting on other ivies

**General Comments: ** I was very surprised to receive a likely letter but I am ecstatic!! Good luck to everyone else and I hope to see you at Dimensions!

Other
State (if domestic applicant): Florida
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public (with Magnet programs), Also attended Florida International University for some classes and Miami Dade College (10th grade-12th grade)
Ethnicity: Hispanic (White)
Gender: Female
Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): $25,000/year, one working parent
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First Generation, Hispanic, underprivileged

Reflection
Strengths: Good G.P.A. (weighted/unweighted), leadership positions in EC, many community service hours with original project, National Scholar award, 3 years in Dual Enrollment magnet program.
Weaknesses: Test Scores could’ve been better.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: They liked me?
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: University of Miami, University of Florida.

General Comments: am completely dumbfounded that I got a likely letter. Frankly, I was expecting a rejection from Dartmouth along with the rest of the HYPMD colleges that I applied to (ended up applying to about 14 universities). I applied because I did not want to look back later in life and wonder if I could have been accepted. It turns out I made the right choice however. I am very happy although I am considering my other choices and waiting for all the other schools to get back to me. Financial aid is also a factor in my decision so we will see.
Good luck to everyone else and congratulations to all the other students who received likely letters.

Decision: Accepted (via Likely)

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2290 (800 CR, 700 M, 790 W)
SAT II: 750 Math II, 800 Literature
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): NA
Senior Year Course Load: (my school has hardly any AP classes) Calculus, advanced English independent study, Gov/Econ, Masks 2, Theatre production (I finished my senior year in a semester, so each academic class took twice as many periods as it normally would)
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Erm. I’m assuming being a National Merit commended scholar doesn’t count, yeah?

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Mostly theatre-oriented stuff (both community and school theatre), convinced our local cinema to be the first in the US to give film ratings using the Bechdel test (I’m assigning the ratings myself), voice lessons for 4 years, dance classes, independent academic study, internship discussing subtext in film w/ a former movie director
Job/Work Experience: Paid acting and voice work
Volunteer/Community service: Wrote a grant proposal to regain water rights for our local community (small community, traditionally farmers), take care of neighborhood strays
Summer Activities: I did a musical with a local teen theatre group every summer
Essays: CommonApp: My least favorite part of my application…not horribly written, but probably a very common topic (7/10) Supplement: Wrote about a production of Antigone I did in an abandoned public pool (SO much fun). This one I was pretty proud of (9/10)
Teacher Recommendation: One from my English teacher who did an independent study with me. I love her to bits and we spent a lot of time obsessing over books together, so I’d say 9/10. One from my History teacher, who I got along with pretty well–same dark sense of humor 8/10
Counselor Rec: Super generic, I’m guessing. I liked her pretty well, but I don’t think she really knew me well at all 6/10
Additional Rec: Peer rec from a cousin who I’m really close to–it came in late, but it was really sweet 7/10, and a rec from my theatre teacher who let me co-teach my last class there. He was amazingly supportive and just all around awesome, and his letter was wonderful 9/10.
Interview: N/A
Supplementary Material: N/A

Other
State (if domestic applicant): New Mexico (which I’m sure helped)
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Small state charter for the arts–audition to get in
Ethnicity: White
Gender: female
Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): Erm, probably somewhere around 30,000 a year. Artist parents–not exactly the most lucrative field.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): New Mexican living in a fairly traditional rural village

Reflection
Strengths: ECs, supplemental essay, recommendations made contact with the office of admissions
Weaknesses: Definitely my common app. Ergh. The light course load. No important awards
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think the combination of the underrepresented state and the majors I applied for (Theatre, gender studies as a second choice, which considering the recent sexual harassment scandal is probably something they’re really looking for) helped a lot, because it’s definitely not something I was expecting at all.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Deferred EA from UChicago (I’ll hear back this Friday…), wait listed from WUSTL. Haven’t heard from anywhere else yet.

This was such an amazing surprise, and having this come in lifted a huge weight off my shoulders after the Chicago deferral. I definitely didn’t expect it, but I’m so psyched!! Best of luck to all the other applicants, and congratulations to the other accepted students!

[] Counselor Rec: Again, I didn’t read it, but my counselor is amazing, and she really tried to write to my character as an upstanding student/person

[] State (if domestic applicant): OR
Country (if international applicant): Nope
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: F
[] Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): Upper-ish middle
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None[/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: My essays; Girl Scouts; showing passion for writing
[] Weaknesses: Not a ton of leadership. No hooks.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: They’re looking to fill a specific niche and I just didn’t fit it! No hard feelings.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected: Dartmouth. Waitlisted: Brown. Accepted: some safeties, then Colorado College, Boston College, Tulane, Wesleyan, and STANFORD[/ul]

General Comments: I am not feeling too down on myself right about now – I CANNOT believe I got into Stanford! I’m really excited with how it turned out, and I’m glad Dartmouth recognized I wasn’t the best fit for their school. It just goes to show that anything can happen. I’m also really glad I didn’t end up doing a blanket application to all these big name schools/all the Ivies, as I think none would have been quite the right fit for me. The waitlist/rejection certainly makes my decision easier! Big congratulations for everyone who was accepted!!
Oh, and for future reference to those freaking out in the coming years, I never recieved nagging financial aid emails, and my portal never changed to recieved and satisfied, it was always “and under review.” It bummed me out to see that on the day before acceptances came out and realize it probably would have changed by then if I was getting in – but it DEFINITELY all turned out for the best.

Reflection
Strengths: Test Scores, some ECs, CommonApp essay, recommendations, character
Weaknesses: Leadership positions at school
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was initially deferred ED because I did not fit the applicant pool they were seeking, ie. recruited athlete, legacy or first generation. I believe I was accepted RD because of GPA, test scores, awards, recommendations and demonstrated interest.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Brown, Northwestern, Davidson (with impressive merit scholarship), William and Mary Monroe Scholar Program, and Hutton Honors College @ IU, Waitlisted: Swarthmore and Vanderbilt. Deciding between W&M, Davidson, and Brown

General Comments: After being deferred ED and then applying RD to several other schools it was nice to be sought after by the other schools. The recent concerns over sexual assault and hazing at Dartmouth raised a few red flags for me. The decision regarding not accepting AP credits did NOT impact my decision. Best of luck to Dartmouth Class of 2018. You made the decision that is best for you! So will I!

**General Comments: ** Be serious about your high school education, but not serious to the point where you stress over everything and only stare at books. Just work hard, take that extra dose of caffeine on rough study nights, have fun, and pursue what you love. Don’t pad your resume with a billion clubs. Be well-rounded but with a focus. Aim high but don’t set your heart on any one college, no reach is a guarantee! Just be yourself, show your potential, relax (easier said than done) and the rest will take care of itself. You will end up somewhere great! After all, if you shoot for the moon, you’ll land among the stars :)

General Comments: Apply to as many schools as possible. Each year, acceptance rates keep going down. As you can tell, had I only applied to 11 schools, there could have been a chance of getting in nowhere. Make sure you work on those essays since everyone starts to look the same with the same stats. Also regardless of where you get in, know that what you do in college counts much more than where you go to college.
