Does Dartmouth admit by major?
No, they don’t.
Do they interview most applicants?
Has anyone received an interview yet? My daughter applied 12/20 and has not. Do interviews really hold any weight?
They try to interview as many as they can but I believe it still has to do with the alumni availability in your geographic area. It isn’t a good or bad sign if they get an interview or not. The interviewer does fill out a form on the interviewee and sends it in - how much weight it holds likely varies by the applicant - certainly not a tremendous amount but also likely not none. Dartmouth cares deeply about their community culture so likes to know what kind of community member the student would be.
Yes email came yesterday. Don’t think it weighs much though.
Thanks. We are in rural upstate NY. Guessing there are not many Dartmouth alums in our area. Only 2 kids from her school applied (my daughter and her boyfriend!) and neither have gotten an email for an interview.
One of the options is over zoom from what she was given. So I think they will reach out soon and give that option as well.
I just received my interview request 4 days ago, my interview is over zoom tomorrow.
I already have some experience with an interview with MIT last week, but I am just a bit nervous since Dartmouth ( according to their admission podcasts) encourages interviews to challenge students .
Had my interview on Jan 14th. It was great and the interviewer even did some of the same activities/clubs I did. Said some positive things like “I’m glad high-level and impressive applicants like you are applying to Dartmouth from our area”
Looking forward to march/April
My daughter had her interview last week also over zoom. She thought it went really well. We are in So Cal area.
Is it a bad signal if there has been no outreach yet for interview? I’m in a major metro east coast
That’s really encouraging news. Glad you had a great interview. My DD is tentatively having it next week, saying tentative because they haven’t confirmed. She just ranked hee preferred dates from what was given.
No. Don’t fret it takes time and they could reach out in Feb. My daughters school- those who applied (~10) got interview requests last week. It just happened to be the regional interview coordinator reached out early. They did not read all those apps in one week.
My daughter still has not gotten an interview.
No interview here yet either. Also waiting to hear if she’ll get an interview at Vassar.
Can I ask what area you live in?
New Hampshire.
As someone who has done a lot of alumni interviews, I would expect that they have a very marginal impact on the admissions decision. Do not worry if you do not have one scheduled. A very positive or very negative interview report might prompt the admission’s office to revisit the file, but I would not expect that more than 1% of interviews change the final decision.
I would highly recommend that accepted students that were interviewed get in touch with their interviewer and let them know that you are attending. If the interviewer responds back to you, ask them for help with networking which is one of the primary benefits of attending Dartmouth.
