[] Essays: To be honest I didn’t really like my commonapp essay at the time, but when I read it later it seemed fine :). I did enjoy writing the supplement essay about the origin of my nickname and told them the story of moving back to China and how I dealt with the changes.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Loved my teachers so I think they were good!
[] Counselor Rec:Really close with her, and she’s my mentor so it would’ve been good!
[] Additional Rec: Got two of my friends to do my peer review, one was semi formal the other was very casual, I think both should different sides of me.
Reflection
[] Strengths: Had good scores and good grades at school.
[] Weaknesses: International applicant, so I had no idea what my chances were. No major international awards. No special talents
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I moved back and forth from China and NZ so maybe that added to the diversity aspect, and I really tried to show my interest in international culture in my essays :). I was very honest in all my essays. Students from my school have also never applied to unis in the states so I was different? haha honestly I have no idea.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Haven’t received the results yet, but applied to UChicago EA as well
**General Comments: ** It was super stressful especially since no one around me has ever applied to schools in America and I rarely see students from Australasia in this forum. But I think the key is to give it a shot and don’t spend excessive time doubting yourself. I was so mind blown and couldn’t believe that I got in! Congrats to everyone who got in and hope we meet someday :D!!

[] AP (place score in parentheses): Doesn’t offer AP classes and couldn’t take advanced classes due to scheduling issues
[] IB (place score in parentheses): N/A

[] Summer Activities: Last summer I went to China with a program and I got to go to a Mock CPPCC (Committee People’s Political Consultative Conference) conference and other internships
[] Essays: Common App essay was about an academic program I joined when I was 10 years old and talks about how I used it to get a scholarship to my current school. Supplement was about my trip to China.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t read but I’m sure they were good. One was from an English teacher that I only had for a year and the other was from a teacher that I have been working with since 9th grade.
[] Counselor Rec: Didn’t read but it must have been good.
[] Additional Rec: Peer recommendation from a very close friend
[] Interview: I thought it went pretty well. We spoke for around 45 mins about school and why I like Dartmouth.

Reflection
[] Strengths: Good EC’s Test scores also didn’t hurt
[] Weaknesses: My GPA is on the low side but I go to a really competitive school
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think that I was able to convey a lot of my personality through my application. Even though I don’t necessarily have the best grades or the most difficult classes, I work really hard and I am dedicated to everything I do and I think that came across to the people who read my application.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I only applied to Dartmouth

**General Comments: **
I’m really glad that I got in. I thought that my GPA would be too low for me to qualify. I was checking the information here on CC from previous years and I didn’t think that my chances looked good. I just figured that it was worth a shot to apply early and it worked out really well for me.

[ color=red][ b]Decision: Rejected **

Objective:
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2310 (720CR 790M 800W 11 essay)
[] ACT (breakdown):
[] SAT II: 800 (Math II) 800 Chem 800 Physics
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): N/A but AAAAb (A-Level chem, bio, physics, maths, as english)

[] IB (place score in parentheses): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: A-Level Physics, chemistry, bio
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Nothing. At all.
[ b]Subjective:**
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Professional sand painting artist (gallery was visited by very high officials, EU Ambassador,…~1500hrs over 5 years), Yosakoi dancer, volunteer at Red Cross NZ,

[] Volunteer/Community service: Founded a charity organization
[] Summer Activities: Run a health campaign at a rural Vietnamese village
[] Essays: My CommonApp is about my working with disabled sand artists/ Supp is about ethics in science
[] Teacher Recommendation: Okay. So I only spent two years at my school. Two of my science teachers retired before I could ask them for recs, one of my math teachers is my counselor. So I was left with only 2 - one of them is someone I had a very tense relationship with and the other is the former’s best friend. Well…
[] Counselor Rec: It’s good, talking about my hardships as a Vietnamese living in rural area who tried her best to excel in a top NZ high school
[] Additional Rec: My Vietnamese teacher
[] Interview: N/A
[] Supplementary Material: Sent in pictures of my sand paintings
[ b]Reflection**
[] Strengths: SAT, A-Levels
[] Weaknesses: My Vietnamese transcript, maybe a B in AS English, my essays?, no awards,…
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Maybe getting in as an international is really hard. As this is the Early Round, I still have time to fix my RD apps. If someone is experienced with the college process, please contact me to give some advice. The rejection really hurts. :frowning:
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Nowhere.
[ b]General Comments: ** Keep fighting!!! :D

**Decision: Accepted

Objective:
[ *] SAT I (breakdown): 2060 (M:740; CR: 690; W: 630) - Didn’t send in.
[ *] ACT (breakdown): 32 (E: 33; M: 33; R: 29; S: 31)
[ *] SAT II: Math II: 800; Physics: 740
[ *] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): Hard to gauge because I’m an international but probably around a 4.0. Very strong upward trend.
[ *] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School does not report but counsellor said in his report that I was top 10/150 consistently.
[ *] AP (place score in parentheses): N/A
[ *] IB (place score in parentheses): N/A
[ *] Senior Year Course Load: Most Rigorous
[ *] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): 2nd in National Science Essay Competition; Bronze and Silver President’s Award, Rotary Service Above Self Award etc.

[ /list]Subjective:
[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses):
President’s Award Youth Committee Chair
Vice President of Interact Club
School’s Public Relations Group
Tutor local kids for free
Global Issues Network and Environmental Sustainability Project
Founded and Chaired school’s first Political Panel

Minor Sports
Head of a few more societies
Some other big stuff but I’ll leave it at that

[ *] Job/Work Experience: Volunteered at South African National Gallery; Worked at a retail store during the summer (didn’t list the latter on my app)
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: Tons, through Interact and outside of school. Definitely one of the most involved community service guys in my school.
[ *] Summer Activities: Summer Loving? JK, Volunteering and some part-time work.
[ *] Essays: 10/10 - Common App. One counsellor said it was the best she had ever seen in her 13 years. Poured my soul into it. My Dartmouth supplemental was probably an 8/10.
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: Excellent. They all really wanted me to get in and I had good relationships with my teacher.
[ *] Counselor Rec: SUPERB. He has been like a father-figure to me. He knows me backwards. We’re tight. Called him at like 11:30pm the night I got accepted.
[ *] Additional Rec: Peer rec was also great. My friend is a published poet so he knew what he was doing.
[ *] Interview: Didin’t have one
[ *] Supplementary Material: None

[ /list]Other
[ *]Applied for Financial Aid?: Yip
[ *] State (if domestic applicant):
Country (if international applicant): South Africa
[ *] School Type: Private boys school
[ *] Ethnicity: Black
[ *] Gender: M
[ *] Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): Enough to qualify for a substantial amount of aid
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Very unique story (I am certain they had never read anything like it)

[ /list]Reflection
[ *] Strengths: My essays. Like I said before, I poured my soul into it and it was so me. Also such a powerful, unique African story and I think that was something they wanted on campus. All my recommendations were also of the highest quality. I am so fortunate to have had people who really wanted me to get in.
[ *] Weaknesses: Test scores weren’t the greatest but I guess they were decent for my region. My transcript was also terrible in freshman year. The upward trend was almost exponential.
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: We understood each other very well.
[ *] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Applied EA to Chicago so I won’t withdraw my app just yet - wanna see the decision first.
**General Comments: **
To everyone reading this, particularly internationals, take note of the fact that thus far I’ve had the lowest tests scores. I really think that once you pass a certain mark (I’d say 32/33 ACT) it really doesn’t matter that much. Focus on becoming a whole person. Know yourself and market the best version of yourself to Dartmouth. I feel I did that very well and my essays and recommendations were the only reason I got in. Have faith that you can achieve the type of greatness that test scores don’t predict. I am so fortunate to be in this position and I appreciate the help I got along the way. Never dreamed I would be posting my stats like this.
To my fellow admits - see you in the fall!
To everyone else who got deferred/rejected - Obama got rejected from Swarthmore, so I’m expecting even bigger things from you guys.

Decision: Deferred so sad

Objective:
[ *] SAT I (breakdown): M 740 CR 740 W 800 single sitting
[ *] ACT (breakdown): 34 C (R 35 Cr 35 M 33 S 34 w.9) single sitting
[ *] SAT II: Math 1: 740 Biology: 730
[ *] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9
[ *] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School does not rank but my school is extremely rigorous and many students are accomplished which probably lumps me in a big group of achievers. 20% have an A average and since there is no rank it’s hard to know.
[ *] AP (place score in parentheses): My school offers very few “AP” but offers what they call “college-level” I took at least 6.
[ *] IB (place score in parentheses): N/A
[ *] Senior Year Course Load: Rigorous
[ *] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Hispanic Scholar, National Merit Commendation, 3 National Scholar-Athlete awards, Finalist National poetry contest

[ /list]Subjective:
[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses):
Varsity winter sport- 4 years, president of club, founder of another, ton of theatre art stuff

[ *] Job/Work Experience: summer internship at a well known theatre, tutor and babysitter
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: soup kitchen, 200+ hours w/underprivileged children, service trip
[ *] Summer Activities: sports camps, prestigious writing camp, work
[ *] Essays: Counselor thought fantastic.
[ *] Teacher Recommendations: Excellent and Most Excellent
[ *] Counselor Rec: good
[ *] Additional Rec: never read, good writer though
[ *] Interview: not great actually (I’ve had great with other college interviewers; we just didn’t mesh.)
[ *] Supplementary Material: None

[ /list]Other
[ *]Applied for Financial Aid?: no
[ *] State (if domestic applicant): MA
Country (if international applicant):
[ *] School Type: private
[ *] Ethnicity: hispanic
[ *] Gender: M
[ *] Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): Enough so I don’t qualify
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): thought Hispanic might help a bit but both parents went to college and income good

[ /list]Reflection
[ *] Strengths: thought I had some- my essays, ACT
[ *] Weaknesses: interview and I had my worst semester academically senior fall. I earned 2 Bs in 2 very hard courses. The college may not know how hard these classes are because it was the teachers who made it so tough. I knew it was a risk registering for 1 because he is renowned at school as a hard grader but I thought I could conquer it. :frowning:
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: not sure. really hoping they are just waiting to evaluate winter grades, but I know only 10% of deferred get accepted.
[ *] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Applied EA MIT, EA UMich, EA UVA…waiting on MIT but it wasn’t my second choice so I’ve got to get motivated to start supplements.
General Comments:
finding solace in @AfricanStudent32 commentary:

[ /list][ b]General Comments: ** 1) Be more interested in learning than churning out grades. After a certain point, I don’t think it really matters if you get a 2400 or a 2200 on the SAT. 2) Stop obsessing- constantly reading the stats on this site can make you crazy! When you get to the end of this post, turn off the computer and take a walk outside. 3) Have faith that you will be guided to the very best school for YOU. I have a friend who got rejected from all his top schools and is attending his safety. He couldn’t be happier and is actually doing research that would have been impossible in a more competitive environment. He confirms what we’ve all been told before: College is what you make of it. 4) Relax and don’t loose your sense of humor! 5) Best of luck to all those still in the application process.Terrific choices await you. 6) To my future Dartmouth 2019 classmates: I can’t wait to meet you!!!

[] Job/Work Experience: N/A
[] Volunteer/Community service: I’ve volunteered through honor societies, but nothing significant or extensive. I’ve logged about 100 hours total.
[] Summer Activities: Travelling, taking some online courses. I did an internship before 11th grade through the MITRE Corporation, we built and programmed a mini-submarine. Some leisure here and there.
[] Essays: These were alright and I feel they could have been better, but I enjoyed writing them. My common app essay (on the ‘perfectly content’ topic) is written about my morning routine with my straight razor, and was very metaphorical. My personal statement was about Russian literature and my intellectual experience with it, and was very personal by nature due to my love for Russian works.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One rec, from my 10th / 12th grade history teacher and sponsor of two organizations I am president of, should have been very personal and reflective. My other rec, from my AB calculus teacher and academic team coach, should have also been very reflective and highly emphatic of my strengths; he loves me and told me he wrote great things.
[] Counselor Rec: I don’t have much of a relationship with my counselor, so I can’t really say what it would be like.
[] Additional Rec: I had my sister write my peer rec, and I feel that hers should have been great since she experienced a lot of what I’ve done in high school. I thought it’d be a good perspective for a peer rec.
[] Interview: This went well. My interviewer was a professor of oceanography and was very interesting to converse with. We talked for an hour and a half, largely about oceanography, my perspectives on topics such as empathy and of course my high school experiences. I liked the interview a lot, and I feel the rec must have come out fairly well.
