*-_Official Dartmouth College 2020 RD Results_-*

Good afternoon,

I’m an ED Admit to the Dartmouth '20 class and would like to offer y’all the chance to post your results here in your own thread, though I do encourage you to read through the ED one as well so that you know just how many very qualified people were turned down and how this does not in any way reflect on their worth as applicants or predict their success in life. All of us were in the app process together, and we remained together as some of us were rejected, deferred, or given the green light. I can only hope you do the same.

That said -

I encourage you to share via the format below

Advice to 2021 applicants: Please PM me w/ any questions you may have! You guys got this and remember, even if you don’t get in, you’re not defined by this school at all by any means.

Congrats to all!

Decision: Waitlisted

SAT Scores (and # of sittings): Didn’t send it lol 2000 (CR: 720, M: 630, W: 650)

ACT Scores (and # of sittings): C: 32 (E: 33, CR: 34, M: 29 S: 30, CR+W: 29) Only one sent

SAT II Scores (and # of sittings): Lit (720), Spanish (710)

School Profile (Brief): Small, competitive independent private school

GPA (Unweighted/Weighted): 3.7/4.2

Rank: n/a out of 71

Course Rigor: 7.5 out of 10

AP/IB Scores: 4 APWH, May 2016 for my relevant IB scores

Notable Honors/Awards (USAMO, Intel, etc.): HOSA 1st in region for Pharmacology and 4th in the State of TN

Notable Extra-Curricular Activities: HOSA (Co-President), Varisty Golf (Co-Captain), Tutoring Club (Founder, President)

Work Experience: nada

Non-Consistent Extra-Curricular Activities (Volunteering, Summer Activities, etc.): 200+ hours at a local hospital, 100 hours at a local museum, 32 hours with the red cross in Spain, 25 hours at my school, 36 hours tutoring

Passions: Golf, Reading, Music

Recommendations:I think both were really good. I chose my math and Spanish teacher, both of whom I’ve had for about two years. I’m doing my extended essay, research paper on a subject and topic of your choosing, with my Spanish teacher so we see each other a lot, and my math teacher was my advisor during my junior year so we’re pretty close as well.

Essays (and content, if you like): Supplement was the meaning behind your name and I talked about how I never had the chance to meet my grandparents from Nigeria. Common App was about how I founded a diversity club at my school to celebrate the varying identities of those who attend my high school. Supplement was straight fire and made two people cry, and my ex helped me make my common app almost as good as my supplement.

Interview: Thought I missed it and called my interviewer in a panic to reschedule only to find out it was the day after. Besides my little incident, it went pretty well! I’m good

Your Prospective Major: Spanish and Economics

State/Country: TN

Ethnicity/Gender: African-American/Male

Hooks: URM

Strengths/Weaknesses: My supplemental essay was probably the best thing I’ve written in my entire life, and my common app was way better this time around. Extracurriculars are pretty solid, but maybe if I cured cancer they would’ve given me a spot. Test scores and GPA are kind of blah, but I think it was my sparkling personality that got me this far.

Your Assessment:

I’m happy I wasn’t rejected and I smashed that mf waitlist button real quick, but I’m a glass half-empty kind of guy so I’m not really expecting anything. A big congratulations to those who were accepted, Dartmouth is missing out on some of the amazing people they denied. I hate that the college decision process is continuing much farther into the foreseeable future for me, but who doesn’t like long, agonizing waits?

Other Acceptances/Rejections/Waitlists/Where else you applied:

Decision:Accepted

SAT Scores (and # of sittings):(1 sitting) 1880: 620 CR, 630 M, 630 W.

ACT Scores (and # of sittings): (2 sittings) First Stting: 29 composite, 28 E, 29 M, 30 R, 29 S, 30 W.
Second Sitting: 31 Composite, 31 E, 30 M, 34 R, 29 S, 32 W

SAT II Scores (and # of sittings): (2 Sittings) First Sitting: Chem(760), Math 1 (660), USH(650)
Second Sitting: Math 1 (670), Math 2 (680)

School Profile (Brief): Low performing school in NY: Low graduation rate and low standardized test scores. 2200 students.

GPA (Unweighted/Weighted): 3.80 unweighted, 3.93 Weighted

Rank: 2/520

Course Rigour: Took all Honors courses, didn’t take APUSH because of scheduling conflict but sat for exam. Took as many AP’s as I was able to fit on my schedule.
Senior Year Schedule: AP Calculus AB, AP English Lit, Regents Physics (School doesn’t offer honors or AP), Economics, Government, Advanced Ceramics, Advanced Painting, Physical Education

AP/IB Scores:
AP: World History (4), Chemistry (5), English Language and Composition (4), Spanish Language and Culture (5), US History (4) (self studied for it)

Notable Honours/Awards (USAMO, Intel, etc.): Questbridge Finalist, AP Scholar with Distinction

Notable Extra-Curricular Activities: Future Doctors of America (President and Founder), Class of 2016 (Vice President), Club Truth (a student run Christian club) (Vice President), Badminton, Youth Advisory Council (Executive Board Member)

Work Experience: N/A

Non-Consistent Extra-Curricular Activities (Volunteering, Summer Activities, etc.):
Volunteering: Tutoring for Algebra 2/Trig, Chemistry, US History, AP World.
Family and Children’s Association Volunteer
Summer Activities: Hofstra North Shore LIJ School of Medicine Medical Scholars Pipeline Program, Career Opportunities in the Accounting Profession at Adelphi University

Passions: Big time science nerd, music, medicine (I love those pages on IG that show the autopsies etc.), museums

Recommendations:
Teacher #1: AP English Lit Teacher, basically said I was one of the best students he ever had. He primarily talked about my academic strengths.
Teacher #2: Regents/AP Chemistry talked about my success in and out of the classroom, I’m real close with him so he knew a lot about my character outside of the classroom.
Counselor: He’s basically like my best friend and so he knew what to write about.

Essays (and content, if you like): I’d say my Common App essay wasn’t all that special now when I read it over. I just talk about how I don’t want to be the image the media displays about my community.
Dartmouth Essay was actually better than I thought now that I think of it. I wrote about the name thing.

Interview: Skype Interview, the guy asked to see my submitted application before interviewing me and during the interview he said I would get in but I didn’t believe it. It went really well now that I think about it.

Your Prospective Major: Chemistry or Astrophysics/Astronomy while on the Pre-med track

State/Country: NY/USA

Ethnicity/Gender: Hispanic/Male

Hooks: First generation college student, immigrant, underrepresented minority

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths: Essays, Recommendations, Interview, Extracurricular Activities

Weaknesses: Test scores without a doubt, maybe my GPA?

Your Assessment: Honestly, when I saw the confetti falling and the Congratulations on the screen I couldn’t believe it. My best friend called it but I didn’t think it was true. I definitely do believe that they take the whole holistic approach seriously because otherwise there’s no way I would’ve gotten in with my test scores.

Other Acceptances/Rejections/Waitlists/Where else you applied:

Other Acceptances: Cornell, Princeton, Penn, Williams, JHU, NYU, Macaulay Honors at City College of NY, CUNY Baruch, CUNY Brooklyn, CUNY Hunter, CUNY Lehman, CUNY Queens, SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY Binghamton, Hofstra, Rider

Rejections: Columbia, Harvard, Stanford, Yale

Waitlist: N/A

Decision: Accepted
Deferred from ED

SAT Scores (and # of sittings): 2200 (800 math, 710 reading, 690 writing) and 2170 (780 math, 740 reading, 650 writing)

ACT Scores (and # of sittings): 35 (36 math, 35 english, 34 reading, 35 science, 31 writing) (taken once)

SAT II Scores (and # of sittings): Biology E - 710, and Mathematics 2 - 800 (each taken only once)

School Profile (Brief): We are an AP school in East Texas. Not really any programs for research opportunities or volunteer work. A large variety of teachers and a pretty good UIL team (big network of academic competitions in Texas, stands for Universal Interscholastic League)

GPA (Unweighted/Weighted): like 3.987 unweighted, 4.5 weighted (5.5 scale)

Rank: 4 out of 290

Course Rigour: As difficult as my school could offer. This year I’m in AP Biology, AP Physics C: Mechanics (no E&M for us), AP Literature and Composition, AP US Government, and AP Macroeconomics.

AP/IB Scores: World History (3), Chemistry (3), US History (4), English Lang. and Comp. (4), Calculus AB (5)

Notable Honours/Awards (USAMO, Intel, etc.): AP Honors with Distinction, National Merit Commendation

Notable Extra-Curricular Activities: UIL Math/Science Team (we took a lot of tests on a lot of Saturdays. I have been in it since 5th grade), Band and Jazz Band (Percussionist, both programs are very good and have awards), Theatre, and National Honor Society.

Work Experience: Math tutor at Mathnasium since July of 2016

Non-Consistent Extra-Curricular Activities (Volunteering, Summer Activities, etc.): Nothing notable, a theatre camp one year, shadowed a doctor two or three days.

Passions: Math/science/learning in general

Recommendations: 10/10, all of them. My counselor loves me, the teachers and my band director I chose are very intelligent and know me very well, and my friend who wrote the peer recommendation is a genius.

Essays (and content, if you like): 10/10, definitely. I wrote about my experiences growing up being blind in one eye and talked about how it has made me see things from a different perspective (yes, pun intended). My English teacher and I refined it for 2 weeks, and most people are very emotional when they read it.

Interview: Very good. He was a recruited athlete at Dartmouth and went to Law school, and I am a complete non-athlete that wants to be a doctor, so we had very little in common. I did drive about 2-3 hours to go to the interview, he could tell I loved the school, and we did get along very well, despite our differences.

Your Prospective Major: Biology, Physics, and Creative Writing are listed on my application, in that order.

State/Country: Texas (East Texas, specifically)

Ethnicity/Gender: White, Female

Hooks: Nothing in particular

Strengths: My personality really showed in this application, my coursework is as hard as I could make it at my school (I tested out of Pre-Calculus, the normal math for advanced juniors, and took Calc junior year, but I couldn’t take BC because we don’t offer it), and my essays and recommendations were great. I was also deferred ED, so they already had an interview on file.

Weaknesses: My grades could have been better, but they did steadily get higher. My SAT score might be low for someone with no hooks. I also didn’t take Spanish 3

Your Assessment: Ultimately, my personality fits the school very well. I keep on being told that by various people. I also put everything I had into this application. Dartmouth considers what your school has to offer and are very holistic. Also, I feel like some people try to hide things, like not-as-perfect test scores, but I gave them everything I had and I feel like it might have shown some determination or something.

Other Acceptances/Rejections/Waitlists/Where else you applied:
Accepted: Dartmouth College, Emory University, Southern Methodist University, and University of Texas at Austin.
Waitlisted: Rice University and Vanderbilt University.
Rejected: Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, and Princeton University.

I really do think that I put more into this application than my others. Also, I was deferred ED, so I had basically lost hope until this decision came. I will be attending this fall!
