The invite says an invitation does not mean admittance. Our college counselor says it looks like the alumni club has messed up, and is being tone deaf to student stresses on this matter. College counselor does not think this means acceptance. The timing is awful. Anyway, we should know either way in about a week!
@TTdd16 I’m an international '20, and the admissions office assigned me with interviews as the number of applicants from my country has been rising exponentially (quite literally). We have 1 '19, 2 '20s, and 5 '21s… Super excited for the RD interviewees!
@Seungheehan1 Not at all! I never got an interview and I’m here! Don’t worry about it.
@debrees What I hope they will do this year, from a logistical point of view, is that they adjust for the high yield. Last year’s was 61%, a huge jump from the previous year’s 50ish%. This means that:
1- Less students will be accepted.
2- The class size will be adjusted to 1000 - 1100
3- A lot of gap year students will return: approx. 75
Considering that the total number of applications rose by 5-10% (about 21500), and factoring in 75 returning students, a yield of 60%, and a projected class size of 1050, the acceptance rate comes out as:
6.88% -> that is super low (but also worst case scenario)
When I used a different set of assumptions, I found rates ranging from 7 to 9 percent, and I have to say that my methods are really unreliable as there has not been a drop of information about any of this. You might even call me a conspiracy theorist.
The fact remains that admissions is always tough, so don’t worry about it. The ED acceptance rate will definitely be somewhere between 20 to 25%.
Good luck!
@KeggyGreen Thanks for weighing in. Interesting that you are an interviewer and you haven’t even graduated! I agree that the upcoming class will be lower than last year (maybe 1,050 to 1,100). Do you mind elaborating on how you came with the 6.88% worst case acceptance rate? Do the gap year students from last year get added to the ED numbers, the RD numbers, or none at all? Do they affect this year’s yield? Just curious. I just like running the math. Maybe we should do some predictions on the acceptance rates before ED decisions next week. I sure hope it is over 25%.
These discussions about the current large freshmen class size and the likely lower acceptance rate this year are making me even more nervous. In a perfect world, we would all get in
The head of admissions, Lee Coffin, at a college fair at Pomfret, in early November, said the class size is 1150. Its on youtube.
For the class size of 2022?
Yes for 22’s. Watch the video, he is asked about class size in light of the over enrollment of 21’s
@oscar63 what time in the video does he talk about that? I don’t want to watch the whole thing.
@oscar63 I haven’t watched the video, but there is no way that Dean Coffin can know the class size for the Class of '22 yet. I think what you may be trying to say is that they are trying to manage the admissions process so that they will have an incoming class of ~1150.
To everyone else, let me put that number into perspective. Here are the numbers of enrolled students over the last few years.
2012 1095
2013 1094
2014 1139
2015 1113
2016 1098
2017 1116
2018 1152
2019 1116
2020 1121
Last year, the initial number was 1279 enrolled (which was a shocker), but I believe the actual number eventually came down to 1217 (the number of students who were on campus running around the bonfire as Class of '21).
So, to make a long story short, 1150 is probably the number they always try to hit. Be very, very careful in trying to speculate too much as to how all these numbers will impact the admissions process for the Class of '22. They have been trying out new things in the admissions office, so nobody really knows how the last class will impact this year’s admissions. Just my opinion.
With that said, best of luck to everyone!!
still no news about the decision release date?
The Dartmouth Chicago Club has rescinded their invite to applicants to the 12/14 luncheon because they realized it coincides with the notification date. Therefore, it looks like notification is 12/14. No time given. Apparently in years past, the luncheon was held after notification date.
Thought I’d throw in my 2 cents about the ED decision date since I’m as nervous as the rest of you for my DS. My DH – an alum – received a Dec 5 email from alumni relations office which looked like a form letter. The first sentence said: “Early Decisions will be released late next week, and I wanted to acknowledge your child’s candidacy.” The rest goes on to both raise and lower expectations for alum and reassuring us that his “application will receive a thorough and fair review . . .” So we are thinking Dec 14 is about the right date.
@Shrmpngrtz Of course he doesn’t “know” the class size, did not realize I implied that. Was making the point that the anticipated enrollment for the 22’s has not been changed.
I applied for the class of 2022 ED to Dartmouth College. I have a 33 ACT (avg), and 4.0 GPA (low), 720 SAT2 Chem, and 720 SAT2 Math 1. I am president of my class, play 28 hours of tennis a week competively, own an online jewelry business where I’ve made 10,000 dollars so far in the pay year and a half, founded a club the jr booster club where I now am president: it aims to generate funds for our schools athletic programs to support student athletes. I am in 6 honor societies, and in jr coalition against breast cancer, an organization that helps support women and families suffering from breast cancer in our town. Finally my recommendations were from my English/ math teachers and my others were from a peer and my principle, and I did have someone who was on the board of trustees write me something but he said it probably won’t help much since I’m not that close w him
could anyone see my chances?
(Joining the thread, hi everyone!) @collegeebound it might be helpful to make a separate thread for this, under the “What Are My Chances?” forum. Most people here have no idea what your chances are, because we haven’t even gotten admitted or rejected yet ourselves. We don’t have anything to compare your stats to.
What majors did everyone apply under?
Well… I applied under linguistics.
