I know schools generally spend a certain amount per student, but it was interesting that Dartmouth presented openly that they drop $99,630 each year on every student (2007-2008, so this number has undoubtedly gone up). This puts puts the sticker price - which people generally regard as ridiculous - very much into perspective, no?

They don’t spend $99,630 on each student. They spend gobs of money on all kinds of stuff and they devide that amount by the number of students matriculated to birth a statistic that they publish. If you can ensure that you will suck up $120 k of learning per year, but only paid $40 k per year, then you can head out into the world and tell everybody that you got a really good deal.

Don’t get caught up in all that. It’s a really good school and you will meet some of the greatest people inthe world. If it fits, wear the shoe.

This isn’t just Dartmouth, this is all schools, even down to private high schools. Without generous alumni donations most of these places wouldn’t be able to survive, or would be outlandishly expensive.

Wow, thanks Captain and Lieutenant Obvious ^

This number represents the cost of the educational process at a place of this caliber on a per capita basis, which is simply an interesting statistic that can give students a more appreciative perspective of the process that they are privileged to be a part of.
