Exactly what the title implies. I got accepted by all three, and am rather torn, especially between Dartmouth and Duke.

Go to both accepted students weekends.

You’re either going to be a Duke person or a Dartmouth/Midd person. If you get down to Dartmouth/Midd, then choose Dartmouth.

Thanks for the response. I am planning to go to each school’s admitted student’s weekend (the only place I’ve visited so far is Dartmouth, and I loved it). At the moment I’m leaning towards Dartmouth and Duke, though Midd is definitely still in the cards.

What do you think sets Dartmouth off from Midd and Duke?

good thread. im torn between dartmouth and duke too… i havent visited dartmouth but im visiting duke in 2 weeks.

Midd is has nowhere near as much to offer as Dartmouth or Duke. I agree with Dartmoose: visit and you’ll know.

What’s the difference between Dartmouth and Duke? Well, for one thing, I doubt that you would find a situation at Dartmouth where lacrosse players living in off-campus party houses routinely hire strippers of any race for their parties. Apparently that was fairly normal for Duke. Note that I am not saying that a) anyone raped the stripper, or b) that the students were treated fairly. The large group of profs who took out an ad condemning them before the facts were in is indicative of, shall we say, a bit of a rift in the student/faculty relationship? (And people talk about Animal House…)

I wouldn’t even consider Middlebury. Dartmouth vs. Duke is a tough choice. I personally would pick Dartmouth. Duke has a very distinct campus culture and Dartmouth has a stronger sense of community, a better alumni network, slightly greater prestige and post-graduate opportunities, a nicer campus (imo), etc. I would read guide books with student quotes or watch videos like the ones at theu.com or something to get a better sense of the campus culture about both institutions. Going to the admit days is sometimes misleading because it does not accurately represent what life will be like on a day to day basis.

^ agree with this and exactly conclusion reached by me and S, who made this decision last year. Only thing that would make a difference is money, but happiness trumps change and real money can make a difference. Research internships can also make a difference, if that is direction you are seeking.

For research internships, is Duke the better place over Dartmouth?

In general…Are the research opportunities at Dartmouth great? Or is Dartmouth research very much like many LACs where it doenst compete with universities like Duke/Harvard/Yale/etc.?

I chose Dartmouth over Duke and it was a great decision in my opinion. The advantage for Dartmouth is undergrad focus. It effects everything - more access to grants, better advising, better study abroad, more money for thesis research, smaller classes, more undergrad focused professors, etc. Duke is an AMAZING school, but I like the tightknit feel of Dartmouth better.

The thing about research is that graduate students normally get first pick. Sometimes it can be easier for undergrads to get research internships when there aren’t any–or many–grad students around to compete with.

Consolation…U r rite about grad students gettin first pick over undergrads more prone at sum universities than others~

But places like Duke i heard do care about their undergrads and give them ample opportunities…So I’ve just been torn if Dartmouth just cant offer as much >< (Technology wise and stuff like tat)
