Awesome… I remember that… 1 year and a bit ago… -_- hahaha! I really do feel quite old here… like come on… I turn 20 this year!

But great for 18! First time everything (almost) is legal

yup:):):):):):):):):)
Sorry had to make that 10 characters long:)

Nice!
I just encountered the “10 Character” rule -_-

59? I thought it was 50

Cause 9 days makes a huge difference o_0
haha I am going to count to the 1st April (so if anything is before that I get a lovely (hopefully lovely) surprise. But only going to start counting days about a week or two before…

Haha! My friend’s been counting down since the day he applied crazy

Wow… some may argue I don’t want it enough though I think we all know that we all want to be accepted :)

I was only offline for 3 hours and there are 2 new pages, this thread is incredible :D

Country: Pakistan
Intended Major - Computer Science
Hobbies etc - rowing, basketball, cadet corps, network engineering, systems/server administration and other stuff in computers

Hey guys !!

I try to be active, but whenever I post, most of you are alseep so I have to wait until the next morning to your posts. Then I go to school from 7:40 am to 2:40 pm and I usually have something to do after school.

My school system here is different from the US too. We have high school for 7 years but the last two years are optional. They’re called sixth form. So it’s like this: 1st to 5th form are the required years of high school where you graduates with CXC subjects. Then you go to sixth form for two years. There is upper six an lower six. in those two years you can also start university, go to community college or do a pre-university course that takes you directly into the two best universities here. However, for those doing medicine and law, we must do sixth form as the CAPE subjects are requirements to get into those courses. (Law and Medicine are undergrad courses here.)

You can choose what subjects you want to do for CXC and CAPE. I did 9 CXCs and 4 CAPE. and trust me, the four CAPE subjects are harder then the 9 CXCs.

I do Caribbean Studies, Law, French and Spanish. However, in French and Spanish we have to both language and literature (It’s one grade though.)

There are 2 schools here with IB programs but those schools are only for the elite … like entrepreneurs and ambassadors kids.

And i’m open to questions guys … although I’ll probably have to wait until tomorrow to see them (It’s 4:24 pm now)

^Same problem! This thread moves so fast, it adds about 5-10 pages a day on my phones CC app haha
I really hope I actually get to meet you guys tho, your lives sound much more interesting than ny barely international one :p

Also belated thanks @nook and @raith

Sent from my SGH-T959P using CC

@Sunny
Got to keep up! ;)

**@Jawad
Very warm welcome to you! First person from Pakistan on this thread, and also I think first computer science major
So you row, do you row individually, 2’s, 4’s 8’s?
**

@Carib
Sorry that a couple of us are really ahead, though maybe try bring in the people closer to your time zones to start discussions etc?
Your high school set up sounds very similar to the IB and A Levels (where you get your HS diploma essentially after your fifth year, but most continue to do the last 2 years that are similar to college/pre-u courses).
Sounds pretty rigorous! I like the subjects, the fact that you can do Law at this stage makes me think that it truly is an advanced system (or offers a really wide range of subjects?)

@Canadian
Would love to meet everyone here! Great personalities, passions. I know it will probably be the case, but right now it is kinda hard to imagine that we don’t all get in, or even go to the same uni :S
In terms of the discussions, please do feel free to read over everyone’s posts and see if their is anything that you want to say And write in one, two even three long posts if you must addressing parts to people if you want.

It might be difficult to include everyone from your region of time zones in active discussion going back and forth, but you can still (and are definitely encouraged) to answer/give insight/take things further. Chances are when we wake up we will pick up from where you left off.

Hey Raith !! I’m still up watching football. (It’s 11:41 PM)

The system is quite rigorous. We have to do research papers, practicals speeches and stuff as part of our final grades. It takes a lot of time, trust me. Like last year, I had to do two speeches (Span and French) and two research papers. It’s stressful. And law at CAPE level is really the basics but we have to know a lot of cases and such. It’s fun. Opens your eyes a lot too.

And yes, we do get our HS diploma after 5th from. and yes, the Caribbean is more advanced than people think. And our exams are like thr British A and O levels, just with a more Caribbean focus. There is a wide range of subjects too.

We have a lot of focused subjects like Accounts, Principles of business, Management of Business, Sociology, Georgaphy, Economics, and a lot of technical subjects like Building technology, Electrical something, this something named GMED (Not sure what it means lol) and Computer Science. That’s just a few. And I really mean a few.

You people are making me like Dartmouth more though. Lol. I hope we all get in.

Hey Carib glad to see that you are still up which teams are playing?

Sounds like the Cambridge pre-U type system! You seem to be a very competitive applicant, good for you… bad for us xP

Yea, our school only offered the typical subjects you find at school (nothing even remotely linked to possible vocational training)… maths, sciences, humanities, languages… no business, no computer science, no specific applications of the sciences (like the building technology that you named)…

Haha! Well hey, right now I think all of us want to go to Dartmouth - unless we get accepted to our first choices (and even then I think it will be a difficult decision to make) :D

Mexico 0 - 0 Jamaica.

Difficult decision indeed. I don’t have a first choice now really. Idk what to use to make a school my first choice. i’m totally confused.

Honestly, I think I’m ordinary. There are really a lot of Caribbean applicants yearly. I don’t even know if the adcoms know all this stuff. Hopefully they know.

And that’s one good thing about our system. it allows us to both specialize and open up our options from high school.

I am guessing you are rooting for Jamaica :)

Well for me, I have a few “first choices” (Princeton, UPenn-VIPER, MIT) all because they offer one of the best combinations of majors I am wanting to do, but Princeton is slightly higher for me as I know that I will really enjoy the environment and will fit in My sister went there and we visited a couple times - was so much fun, and such a beautiful campus! :D

I think you are modest xP that is based on the fact that I don’t know how many (if any) of us feel like we are all that But I think it is the Adcoms’ job to know the differences (or at least enough of them) between systems. But they seem to like that you have taken one of the heaviest course loads possible at your school.

At face value, your system seems really good; opens up options for people wanting to go into a specific field or study further.

lol. Yes, i was rooting for Jamaica.

Well, Middlebury is the best school for me bcuz of its foreign language courses. But it’s so far away from family and civilization. Same for Dartmouth. The urban and suburban schools that i like are large and not as good in the languages as Midd. I has one interview and I was able to get a lot from that alum. I wish i could talk to more alums cuz sometimes what is on the site is not what really happens.

So far, I’ve heard that Midd, Georgetown and Dartmouth are the best for languages. So I guess they should be top three. But GTown and Midd aren’t need blind and I need a full scholarship. I also wish I could afford go there for a while and visit campuses. That would also help my choice.

CAPE is the heaviest work load at my level. Unless I went to pre-univerity which forces two years of CAPE into one. The system is excellent though. I can honestly say that. All my friends who migrated to America during their high school years have been top students at high schools. Even those who weren’t as smart here aced their courses.

I didn’t really look at Middlebury or Georgetown… but I am going for something completely different :)

I really hope that you are able to get into Dartmouth (especially for the aid) - seems like pretty much everyone here is going for Ivys for the aid…

Sounds like it! A Levels doesn’t really have a heavy work load… but the depth of the topics do require that you have a firm understanding (which can lead you to having a heavy work load as you have to work…) for me though I actually barely spent time on homework. The subjects I did allowed you to not do any work, but as long as you understand what is going on and can apply everything you can get a good grade. No projects, essays, speeches or course work of any type really during the year - all that mattered is the finals.
