**Dartmouth International Applicant's Thread 2017**

@Sunny
Going to try go for the best of both worlds? :smiley: Deciding on a major actually seems to be one of the hardest parts of university for me… just too many amazing options!! :P

I actually prefer engineering cause I find that once you understand the concepts (especially the maths and physics) you just have to do a little work to keep up with it… but they can throw almost any type of question at you and you should be fine - even if you didn’t learn the way they want you to apply it :smiley: its like one really big complex puzzle!!

@Raith
Yes, everything sounds so interesting :slight_smile: It is really hard to decide.

But what is so fascinating about physics? It is so boring at school :D

@Raith - actually no. Dartmouth offers a 4 yr BS in engineering and a 5 yr BE. While the BS is apt if you want to do masters after undergrad, it is not enough to get you a good job since BS is not accredited by ABET. On the other hand it has a 5yr Be which provides for those who want to work straight out of undergrad. The 5yr BE though, can be completed in 4yrs - provided you take a tough course load with one/no minor!! Best part – Dartmouth provides finaid for the extra year too!! :p

@guyinblue - I thought so too. But the form requires a video of some sort! I don’t have one and no time to make one. Boards start from next week!! :(

@sunny12 - I disagree - Physics is the ONLY interesting subject at school!! :stuck_out_tongue:
But then it varies from person to person. I never liked biology or anything remotely attached to it - so that narrowed down my major choices quite a bit. Physics, Economics, Engineering(mainly electronics & stuff) and Environmental studies are my favorite areas – so hopefully at the end of 4(or 5) years - I’ll have done something in everything!! :p

I’m from Kolkata :smiley:

I keep having dreams that they finally allowed me to start a bird-watching club in school but it probably won’t happen in my lifetime.

The hardest thing for me was choosing a major because I love pretty much all my subjects!

The only thing I DON’T like about Dartmouth is the weather. I’ve been told you risk getting frostbite -.-

@keya93

So, the weather will probably be perfect for me. I love snow and frost :)

wow, I really need to keep watching this thread :’)

I have my Dartmouth interview on Saturday (quite excited actually!)…
Any tips ??

@lemming101
I have my interview today in like 40 minutes. Gosh, I am really excited :slight_smile:
I will let you know how it was :)

^ All the best sunny12!! Hope it goes well! :)

And all the best @lemming!!

Probably a bit late but all the best to all the interviewees! :D

@Sunny
Physics is interesting cause it explains everything… it teaches you how to think to explain what you need. There is very rarely a grey area - it is either right or wrong! I love it! I enjoy bio, but I prefer the human body, more along the physiotherapy sort of lines as I tend to help friends of mine through sports injuries (free physiotherapy if you are friends with me… once again - forever alone much? hahaha!)

How did your interview go?! :smiley: Tell us all about it!!

@Rishav
Wow! I really should have done my research better!.. Hopefully I can finish it in 4 years - though I might try do a double major if I get the chance… Thanks for pointing that out to me…

@Sunny AND @Keya
Keya how can you not love the cold?!! I’m with you here Sunny… you in for the polar bear swim with me? :smiley: Who else is in?!
I am actually applying to mainly North Eastern Unis because they have a more temperate to cool climate… I can’t stand the heat! (yes ironic considering where I live… -_- )

@Lemming
No major tips, just go with the flow, and if everything seems a little too scripted maybe try asking questions and starting a good conversation. If you know your interviewer’s name maybe try google him and find out; what he did, sports, arts, interests, where he has worked, etc… always a good conversation starter if you can fit a question about one of those into the interview (obviously something you would be interested to talk about)… That’s all the advice I can give - but I’ve only had one interview and it was more like the guy was marketing the uni and asking all the questions the top ones have in their supplements… I just sat there relaxed, but irritated that there was no interest or life on the interviewer’s part :(

@rishav17 and guyinblue
Thank you :)

@Raith
I am definitely in! :smiley: Free physiotherapy? I think we have to end up at the same school and should become friends :smiley:

My interviewer was really lovely. She laughed a lot and was really kind.
Unfortunately, my internetaccess isn’t the best and couldn’t handle a skype video chat. :smiley: Therefore, the video stopped some times or you couldn’t hear anything.
However, we talked for half an hour. First she introduced herself. She asked about my school, why I want to study in the US, to which colleges I applied, which book I love (luckily she knew it and it is her favourite book, too), my favourite subject at school.
She wanted to know what makes me unique and I could ask her some questions.

By the way, I asked why you have to swim 50 yards to graduate. And she meant that there are sport requirements for freshmen and they want to do something good for the students, and 50yards aren’t that far :D

@Sunny
Awesome! Cold water swim buddy :stuck_out_tongue: I think we can be friends even if we don’t end up at the same school? :stuck_out_tongue: haha, but yes!

Sounds like you had an awesome interview :smiley: I hope it went very well for you! How did you answer the what makes you unique? (out of curiosity - no need to answer :stuck_out_tongue: ) And what is your favourite book? (I actually don’t read much… it’s a wonder I can read, write and speak english -_- haha)

Well 50 yards really isn’t far… in a normal pool (25 metres) it isn’t even the whole of the two lengths! Almost… but short by like 5m.

Hope you get into Dartmouth! Were your SAT and predicted final grades good? :)

@Raith
Sure we can. I hope I will meet you at Dartmouth! :slight_smile: If not, I will see you on Mauritius some day:D

Yes, my grades are good. I took the ACT and sucked on it, but explained the circumstances. I took the SAT Subject Tests on Saturday and hope to get good scores :)

My favourite book is the girl who played with fire. Really? I love to read. :smiley:

I was honest and said something like that I always solve problems in my own way and stick to them til I find a solution (even if my solutions are right, no one understands my approach it just confuses them)…
I just didn’t come up with something that makes me really unique. Hope she will write something nice anyway.:D

@sunny12 woooo congrats on a great interview…
Hate that March is so far away!!!

@Sunny
That sounds like a plan! Lets hope its at Dartmouth first though ;)

Good luck for those scores :slight_smile: my SAT wasn’t great (well not compared to the normal group of people applying :confused: ) but its still good, and so are two of my three subject scores.

I find reading just takes too much time… I’d rather swim a couple kilometres, kites surf, sleep, eat and see friends rather than miss it all for one book :confused: luckily I have still read and enjoyed a few books, but not many (probably my weakest point as a university applicant). Watched the movies (the original and the remake) - love the story line, quite intense :slight_smile:

Haha, quite unique indeed! I’m kinda similar, I take a different approach, and most of the time it works, but because of my A Levels, I need to be able to explain it to get the marks or do it the way they want us to :frowning: :P

@Lemming
Me too! I just really want those letters to come in! Tired of waiting… I’m just crossing my fingers that I don’t get rejected everywhere… that would be mortifying!

same here:) Just a long with for the end of march and btw what swimming requirement…for engineering undergrads???

@Quiver
March will be the death of us all! :slight_smile:
I believe that for Dartmouth the swimming requirement is 50 yards for everyone - regardless of your major. I don’t know what rules they have for it though… if you can use a floatation device, have a friend help, hire a horse to pull you along… probably do it alone, but I don’t think there is even a time limit.

@Raith
Which subject did you take? probably Maths and physics? :slight_smile:
I would always prefer the book over the movie.
Luckily, I only have to do it in the way they want it in my oral examinations. But I don’t plan to do them :smiley:

That would be horrible to get rejected everywhere. Then, I think we all have to reapply to Dartmouth’s class of 2018? :D

@Sunny
For my SAT II’s? Yea; Maths II, Physics and French… I did terribly on French though :stuck_out_tongue: I don’t know the grammar… give me a conversation and I am fine :P

Reading just takes too long! :stuck_out_tongue: I love the descriptions… but movies can get that across very well too, especially with sounds etc.

I think that is good idea (though I don’t know if they will accept us if they have already rejected us? :stuck_out_tongue: ) - we would have to have done something really interesting in that 9 months for them to accept us, I think :|

@Raith - Haha!! I think you just have to swim across 50yrds without any help and in your own sweet time! :stuck_out_tongue:
That should be quite easy for MOST!! :)

And I’m in a similar situation with my SAT scores. High, but not good enough. though my subject tests were 750+ … :)

The last week of march/first week of april, is going to be the time when all my dreams come crashing down!! :(

And class of 2018? Nah - I guess my next choice would be to apply for a transfer next year(which is EVEN more tougher!).
