With summer almost here I am looking forward to the possibility of visiting some of the fine academic institutions our nation has to offer. I know that sophomores will still be in session at Dartmouth during the summer, but I still fear that I will not be able to get a good idea of the 'vibe' (or other intangible qualities that can be determined during a college visit) with most students not on campus. Has anyone on this forum made a visit to Dartmouth during the summer? If so, did you find it to be a sufficient means of assessing life at Dartmouth College, or would you recommend waiting until fall session to visit? Thanks in advance!

The summer is a great time to visit Dartmouth. You'll see lots of students lounging on the green or taking a swim in the Connecticut river. Everything is the same on campus except that a few dining halls have reduced hours, and not all the dorms are open. I think you'll get a good sense of Dartmouth's relaxed, fun-loving vibe during the summer months.

my daughter visited in the summer and she wound up attending dartmouth.

dartmouth students swim in a river? i want to go there now.

Summer at Dartmouth is a ton of fun.

You think that's something? Some of our freshmen LIVE in the River (you know, housing crunch and all).

To the question, "Would a summer visit be a sufficient means of assessing life at Dartmouth College, or would you recommend waiting until fall session to visit?" No and No.

Don't think it matters Summer/Fall/Spring. However, to sufficiently assess life at Dartmouth College, I would think two visits necessary, one of which taking place in the winter.

Um, not really. Unless you'd apply that standard to every college in the Northeast and many in the midwest. I assume you're trying to say something about weather.

Thanks for all the responses guys, the information is greatly appreciated. I am especially intrigued by all this talk about the Connecticut River. But I guess in a sense, touring Dartmouth during the summer may even be a better means of a visit since the Sophomore Summer is something entirely exclusive to the Dartmouth experience--so I guess I'd get a better sense of what makes Dartmouth unique.

The discussion here is about Dartmouth.

I make my recommendation as both an alum and as a parent of one child who has considered Dartmouth and another who is considering Dartmouth.

Winter in Hanover is not winter in NYC nor winter in Boston nor winter in Hartford nor winter in Providence.

I believe it unwise to make a decision to attend Dartmouth without ever having visited Hanover in the winter.

With regard to visiting in the Summer, Dartmouth is in session. It is as good a time as Spring or Fall to visit.

Winter at Dartmouth sucks but I really don't think it's that big a deal. I mean it's not Siberia.

And as to what Nai was saying, I definitely heard of winters in at least some parts of the Midwest as being MUCH worse than those in even New England. So it's not like Dartmouth has a monopoly on the worst winters in America.

But winter at Dartmouth is terrific if outdoor winter sports are your thing. Skating, skiing, snowboarding -- come on, it's great!!

^^ finally someone who speaks some sense.

Winter at dartmouth is amazing.
My favorite term.
