The Dartmouth Environment

I'm currently a high school junior and after looking at a variety of colleges, I have found Dartmouth to be one of my favorites. My family has planned college visits for this summer and I was just wondering what activities, events, or people I should be looking out for. I really want to make the most out of my college visit and get a good feeling about the ambiance that Dartmouth offers.

In particular, I am looking at the economics department, the marching band, and the DOC. The economics department was the reason I was attracted to Dartmouth in the first place. Is there anything special about it that I should look for/ask about during my visit? The marching band is a scatter band, which is something I am completely unfamiliar with. I LOVED high school marching band with its strict organization. Has anyone done both? If so, what do you think about the transition? Is it worth it? Is there a concert band as well? How is that? In addition, are ski trips part of the DOC? From what I've read on various threads, the information seems to be mixed. Dartmouth really solidified itself for me as a top choice due to the availability of ski slopes. How is the skiing in comparison to Colorado or Utah slopes?

Also, do you think that a college visit will give me an accurate perspective of the community at Dartmouth? I am very much a tomboy, girl-next-door, weird but outgoing type, and I really hope to fit in at Dartmouth (if I can get in fingers crossed).

Going over the summer is going to be a totally different animal. There is sophomore summer so they will be on campus and attending classes. You will not get the same “feel” for the college that you would if you came on a visit when school was in full swing. However, that does not mean that students there will not share their perspectives with you.
