Dartmouth / University of Waterloo

I want to go into engineering. I live in Canada and the University of Waterloo is the best you can get for any type of engineering. I've now narrowed it down to Dartmouth or University of Waterloo.

I know Dartmouth provides intimate learning sessions and great helpful professors but I can't ignore that Waterloo is consistenly ranked one of the best in Canada and especially for engineering where I'm sure Waterloo has a lot of resources. Waterloo's Co-Op is supposed to be amazing and so many previous students cite it's helpfulness in making extra money and obtaining valuable experience.

I live close to Waterloo but I prefer to move farther away.

How's engineering at Dartmouth? Which school will provide the best engineering education available?

What do you think is the best choice?

Dartmouth is not good for engineering. I don't know much about Waterloo :(

Waterloo, seriously ! Unless you want "ivy league" status which amounts to nothing anyway

If you want to be an engineering, Dartmouth is probably the last place you want to go. If you are planning to study EE, CS or CE, Waterloo is world famous for these three studies. It's also a lot cheaper for you to attend Waterloo than Dartmouth as a Canadian.

what if you change your mind?

Waterloo is great for engineering.

I understand Waterloo has "world-famous" education for engineering students but would it be more helpful to have a well-rounded liberal arts education at Dartmouth for the real world?

Will I receive an education equivalent to Waterloo's because of the intimate learning atmosphere at Dartmouth? Will the strong alumni network at Dartmouth trump Waterloo's fine education? How will the strong, motivated peers at Dartmouth further my skills?

I want a university that has a strong engineering background but also everything in between. I guess my question is, which university provides great engineering but has great "other stuff" that will complete my education?

first of all, "ivy league" status doesn't amount to nothing

it is 100% possible you will change your mind about engineering, in which case you will forever regret your decision to go to waterloo and not dartmouth. there are much better schools than waterloo you can go to for engineering, and when you are at university you might find out that your education is no longer the most important thing to you. you might get a more practical view on the world.

ask in the dartmouth forum about engineering

Dartmouth is definitely more well-rounded than Waterloo, but Waterloo is more hard-core engineering (with little else). I would pick Waterloo if money was an issue, otherwise Dartmouth. Have you considered Cornell or Columbia? That's like Dartmouth + Waterloo in one package. Overall, though, Waterloo is a better deal.

"I want a university that has a strong engineering background but also everything in between. I guess my question is, which university provides great engineering but has great other stuff"

Even though, Dartmouth is not a great school for engineering, I think it's better for you because you want other great stuff as well. One thing you should consider is the tuition. Does it really worth 30K US extra every year to study in the US?
