dartmouth vs amherst

hey
can anyone tell me which school is harder to get into amherst or dartmouth based on gpa, sat score, class rank etc...

or is this a really dumb question?

really dumb question as they both are very selective, there will be an overlap of students who apply to both schools during RD (along with Williams and Middlebury). There have been students admitted to both, some admitted to amherst, denied at Dartmouth while still others have been admitted to Dartmouth and denied at amherst.

well, I would say Amherst... why?

Just imagine why so many people are mentioning HYPSMAWS as best private schools in the country. Just in case..
A: Amherst
W: Williams
S: Swatty

i know they are both really hard to get into, but i mean do they look for the exact same things or does one put more emphasis on gpa or ECs than the other

Rabban is an idiot. Amherst and Dartmouth are equally selective. Dartmouth MIGHT be slightly more selective.

I second slipper1234.

Slipper seems to have an agenda based on all his excessive trolling for his alma mater (shouldn't a successful Dartmouth graduate have better things to do than calling people idiots on messageboards and constantly bashing other schools?)

I'd say they're about equal in terms of admissions, but more people have heard of Dartmouth as it's a university, significantly larger, and in the Ivy League. Amherst, however, is the cream of the crop of LACs so if you dig LACs, you can't go wrong there.

I admit a bias against Dartmouth as I read the essay and personal statement etc of a girl who was admitted there and her character came off HORRIBLY. It made me scratch my head and wonder what the admissions office could possibly have been thinking, but then I am sure that that would be the case with many Amherst students and I know I can't use antecdotes to bash on a school. They're both terrific, actually. To call either more selective than the other is silly, Rabban and Slipper are both wrong.

I said they are equally selective. And have you seen Rabban's other posts? This isn't an isolated comment.

I hope you sleep with your eyes open from this day forward.

The schools are, by and large, similar.

Still there are significant differences you need to see and feel by attending them prior to committing to either one. They are likely equally hard to be accepted to, in their own ways.

In any case, you should be so lucky as to be accepted by either one--like winning a petite sporting event, luck and skills are necessary and involved in both.

Rabba,

I am refuting your constant misinformation, so much of it being seemingly inexperienced and unsubstantiated. I shouldn't have attacked you personally, which I do apologize for.

Fitchmoose,
Thet are similar - and great - schools. Do yourself a favor and do your research. The "opinions" being dispensed here are not "considered opinions."

I would say Dartmouth is more well known, but think historically it's a little harder to get into Amherst, or at least I've met more people who have gotten into Dartmouth and not Amherst than the other way around. While I would prefer Dartmouth, I think, in general, they are relatively comparable.

Amherst app essays are much rougher than anything you'll encounter in most apps, including Dartmouth's.
