Dartmouth Vs. Duke

I posted this on another forum and on the Duke forum now I'm ready for Dartmouth's opinions. Thanks!

What aspects?
My D was initially interested in Duke, ended up at Dartmouth, but has a good friend at Duke.

Atmosphere, academics, social life??
I think there is a great deal of general overlap in their potential applicant pools, with a lot in common that both groups are looking for in a school - I think the biggest difference may be the relative weight given to individual criteria by the Duke fans vs the Dartmouth fans

And the weather. Don't forget the weather.

my roommate ended up choosing between dartmouth and duke. she went to be admitted students weekends and came back LOVING dartmouth. dimensions completely won her over. she also really liked dartmouth's campus.

i think there is a pretty big overlap in applicant pools since i know someone else at dartmouth who was choosing between these two schools. i also have two friends at dartmouth who applied to duke and werent accepted. but they're happy at dartmouth = )

Here is the match: Dartmouth 70, Duke 30.

The New York Times > Week in Review > Image > Collegiate Matchups: Predicting Student Choices

I had lots of friends from Dartmouth who chose between Dartmouth and Duke. I think this choice (along with Brown, Penn, Amherst, Williams, and Columbia) comes up often.

Because I doubt there will be someone here that attended both schools, we'll go to the most impartial sources we can get.

CampusDirt.com - Login Page
Looking at CampusDirt (you need to register), overall they're the same.

But looking deeper, it seems Dartmouth is better.
Athletics - Duke wins hands down.
Campus - Duke is a bit prettier, and has better atheltic facilities, but Dartmouth has larger dorms, and is much safer.
Clubs - Dartmouth has much better participation, better administrative support, and better variety; it's ranked #10 overall in clubs.
Curriculum - Dartmouth was rated overall lower in curriculum despite Dartmouth having better attendance (this means more interesting professors). The reason it was ranked lower was because it had a lower courseload, easier courses, and less overall study time.
Food - Dartmouth has significantly better oncampus food, but less selection in-town. Still, it beat the variety of food Duke offers.
Greek life - Dartmouth has better parties, more support from the administration, and a bigger presence. Go figure.
Parking - Dartmouth sucks with parking, apparently.
Professors - Dartmouth has 10th best professors overall. At Dartmouth, lectures are more applicable, 100% of students rated their professors as "very knowledgeable," which is highest tier. I don't know how large the sample pool is, but that's quite a feat.
Social life - Dartmouth kids hook up more, party more, drink more, use less drugs, have more going on, but have nothing to do in Hanover.
Students - 76% percent of students says "Everyone is genuinely nice" at Dartmouth, compared with 21% at Duke. Duke has better school spirit, but Dartmouth has a tighter community. Dartmouth's student body is #5, while Duke's is #10.
Technology - Dartmouth has #8 best tech. End of story.

I'll look into theu.com and other college sites in a bit.

My friend was making the same decision last year (and hopefully I will be too, after tomorrow) Duke actually was offering him 12k/yr based on merit. He had no idea what to do, until he went to Dimensions. He came back in love with Dartmouth, and has loved it this year.

Great post, sneamia. Sounds like Dartmouth is clearly the winner here :)

In continuation,
Dartmouth College Ratings
Duke University Ratings
TheU.

Academic reputation - Dartmouth is a smidgen higher.
Cost - Duke is higher.
Drug scene - Dukies are druggies. (agreeing with campusdirt)
Getting in - Dartmouth is harder.
Girls - Dartmouth has hotter girls.
Greek life - Guess. (agreeing)
Guys - Dartmouth has hotter guys.
Party scene - Dartmouth has better parties (agreeing)
Politics - Duke is more liberal
Professors/TAs - Dartmouth's profs are amazing... Dukes are mediocre (agreeing)
Quality of food/housing - Dartmouth's is much better than Duke's. (agreeing)
Random hookups - Is more random hookups better or worse?
Safety - Dartmouth is absurdly safe. Duke is "not good..." (agreeing)
Size - Similar in size, Duke being larger.
Sports - Duke wins. (agreeing)
Surrounding area - Dartmouth is more rural (surprise, surprise).
Weather - Dartmouth is colder.
Workload - Duke is tougher. (agreeing)

I disagree with Duke being more liberal.

sneamia- your first post made me fall in love with dartmouth all over again... let's hope tomorrow brings good news

We produced Dr. Seuss.

Duke produced.... Tucker Max/JuicyCampus.com

Jk.

not.

which one is better for pre- med?

^That is the STUPIDEST list I have ever seen in my life. There is no credibility to those statements whatsover as you get your info from "Campus Dirt" and "the U" lol.

CLUBS- Duke and Dartmouth both have an amazing array of EC and club involvement opportunities available for its students. In both of these schools, kids who participate in clubs are actually passionate about these organizations/causes unlike in HS when students were just trying to build resumes. This shouldn't really be a factor when it comes to anyone's college decision making.

FOOD-I can't speak for Dartmouth's on-campus food but Duke has an incredible amount of dining options on campus and there is a great amount of variety/ethnic diversity. Off-campus, Dartmouth CANNOT EVEN BEGIN to compete with Duke with regards to food since Duke is located within an actual city(no town) and students have access to Ninth Street and Brightleaf Square(both filled with excellent restaurants. My friend went to debate camp in Dartmouth and he literally said there were like 2 restaurants TOTAL in that tiny village that the school is located in.

GREEK LIFE-"Dartmouth has better parties" HAHAHAHAAHAHAHA OK. The Greek system is arguably bigger and much frattier at Duke. Like 2/3 of Duke girls join sororities and about half of Duke guys join frats. Duke also has many many more athletes which definitely adds more "coolness" and frattiness to the social and partying culture. There are also a lot of themed parties as well thrown by fraternities and formals that students in frats/sororities go to. Dartmouth's social life consists of kids going down in to the basement of a frat and playing Pong all night long. Sorry, that does not constitute a social life.

PROFESSORS-Again...a moot point. Both schools have great undergraduate focus and the professors are extremely knowledgeable and accomplished at both schools. What does it exactly mean for "lectures to be more applicable"?

SOCIAL LIFE-"Duke kids are druggies" HAHAHAHAHA you're retarded. Most kids here don't even smoke pot or hookah. I really can't speak for Dartmouth but this claim is ridiculous. Also, I have never been to Dartmouth so its hard for me to compare the drinking culture. Duke kids drink A LOT. Most of my friends drink from Wednesday to Saturday. Do Dartmouth kids drink more than that? I seriously doubt it. Duke kids hookup A LOT. There's not really a way you can tell which school has more hookups unless you've spent a considerable amount of time at both schools. Both schools have a large hookup culture. I'm not even sure that's a good thing lol.

Drinking is like all Dartmouth kids can do. Duke students can go clubbing/eat out at restaurants/go to concerts/watch movies/etc. either in Durham or Chapel Hill. Duke clearly has a better social life since it caters to all types of students and just has more options and variety. Kids don't have to be binge drinkers to have fun, although a sizeable amount at Duke choose to anyway.

GIRLS-I'm like 100% sure Duke has more attrative girls. There's no way a Northeast Ivy school can have hotter girls than a southern school. All the chicks at Dartmouth must be wearing like 15 layers all the time and no one looks hot with a puffy coat and a scarf on. Duke girls actually dress up when they go out unlike at Dartmouth where I heard girls just wore regular shirts and pants. Warm weather does wonders for the attractiveness of the female population. Girls always look hotter with a sexy top or a dress than regular Ts and jeans.;)

GUYS-I'm not gay so I can't comment. The Duke ladies on CC can feel free to elaborate.

GETTING IN-Duke and Dartmouth are virtually equally selective.

SAFETY-Yeah Dartmouth wins. SWEET you guys are safe...oh wait there's nothing to do in Hanover. The only way you can hurt yourself is by screwing up a keg stand!

STUDENTS-"Southern hospitality" is prevalent here and everyone is really friendly and laid-back. I'm pretty sure Duke kids are less cutthroat than Ivy League kids. The warm weather makes us happier.:)

WORKLOAD-If Duke is harder, then Duke kids are motivated to learn more right?

I have a great amount of respect for Duke and Dartmouth. Not so much for your ignorant statements however sneamia.

mahavir, Duke is definitely better for pre-med. It has better advising in that area, better placement and acceptance rates into med schools, a central hospital system, more internship opportunites, etc. This is one of Duke's biggest strengths.

^^ Care to share some data on both (Duke and Dartmouth)? Thanks.

Wow.... EAD, you're credibility just went from little to nonexistent. At least the other guy was decent enough to credit the places where he got the points from. He wasn't even agreeing with all of them, just making his own critical views in conjunction with those held by these websites. You on the other hand, are obviously making completely blanket statements that probably hurts Duke's reputation more so than they help. (Many of which, I disagree with very much) Just goes to show you the type of students/people Duke and Dartmouth produce.

That's all I'm going to say.

That isn;t true at all. Dartmouth places extraordinarily well into med school, and is top 7 at every single grad placement survey I have seen. Where did you get Duke is better for pre-med? Total nonsense.Dartmouth's strength is in grad placement, grants, undergrad funding, etc. Its like a top LAC in this regard (which also do extraordinarily well at med school placement).

Sounds like some made up info.

Like I said, I doubt that you have attended both Duke and Dartmouth, so you really can't talk. And I'm getting data from two separate sources. I'm reporting, not pulling things from nowhere. So cut the arrogant school pride and realize that Duke isn't best school in the world.
