I received this e-mail today from Dartmouth.

"Since May 1st, the Admissions Committee has monitored changes in Dartmouth's entering class enrollment closely. Late last week, we contacted a small number of students who were admitted from the waiting list into the Class of 2015. In the coming weeks, we will continue to watch the changes in the number of students planning to enroll in Dartmouth's first year class. At the present time, we cannot predict if we will be able to admit additional students into the Class of 2015. If we are able to take further action, we will once again review the applications of students who have remained on the active waiting list."

I think it means that the school has already accepted some students off the waitlist, and I have not been offered admission... I think it does mean that.... :(

But I am just confused with the next part where it says that they are still "watching the changes in the number of students planning to enroll"... So.. there will be more offers to some of the waitlisted students...?

There might always be students who change their college choice last minute, especially if they were also admitted off the waitlist for one of their top choices. This means spots may continue to open up in the next few weeks/months or so.

thanks chippedtea!
I have sent two e-mails to Dartmouth. One was about why I want to study at Dartmouth and the other was about my recent accomplishments. I also had my teacher send a recommendation letter…

I think you’ve done a lot to show your interest in the meantime. Good job! That’s all that you really can do, I think. Just take care not to annoy them with constant calls, emails, or letters. Good luck!

I think it means exactly what they wrote. They have admitted a few students off the wait list. They are not sure if they will have a need to do so again. If there are any changes in the first year class enrollment, they will review applications of students who are still on the wait list. If you are smart enough to attend an Ivy, this should be pretty clear to you. Sorry if this comes across as snarky, but I really would expect an ivy applicant to understand a clear statement.

Right. Basically this is telling you that they’ve used the waitlist to fill after yield, so it’s just waiting to see how things turn out after HYP use their waitlist.

lol of course, i know what it means… Didn’t you read this part of my comment…?

“I think it means that the school has already accepted some students off the waitlist, and I have not been offered admission… I think it does mean that…”

I was just not prepared for this because I had expected that it would take more than just a week for them to review the waitlisted applicants and make decisions…

Maybe I shouldn’t have posted this question in the first place… hahaha

I should have been a little clearer. My guess is that a couple spots will open up at Dartmouth when Harvard, Yale and Princeton go to their waitlist. Apparently Yale has already, and I think Harvard is supposed to (if they haven’t also used it). The waitlist threads in those school’s forms will have info on that. This is all my guess though, just from what I’ve been reading around here.

I turned down Dartmouth and am on the Harvard waitlist, but apparently Harvards only going to take like 10 kids =(. Still, there’s always hope. Wish I could join you guys next year but Dartmouth’s a bit too rich for my blood

And about the Harvard waitlist. My best friend is on their waitlist and is pretty desperately hoping to get chosen so I’ve been hoping Harvard would take quite a few. I read that in the past they’ve taken 20-30 though. How many kids are on their WL?

around 1000 are on the waitlist. This year, Harvard Crimson, the newspaper, reported that between 10-15 could be accepted. But, Harvard admissions counselor said that the wlist admits would be in the single digits. So basically less than a 1% chance

yeah, pretty much. The past couple of years they took 50-100 kids, so this is a significant decrease. I’ll be going to Washington and Lee on a johnson scholarship, Nulli.

I don’t think I’ll regret going to W&L if Harvard doesn’t work out, but as for so many people its always been a lifelong aspiration. Might as well give it a shot. But please don’t shed any tears for me lol =)

Has there been any news on more spots opening up at Dartmouth? Was that last e-mail kind of gentler form of wait list rejection…or do you guys think there’s still hope?
