Dartmouth weirdness email/mail likely

So I got an email from Dartmouth today telling me I should've received "positive news" in the last few weeks and inviting me to Dimensions. I never got anything in the mail. Also, did anyone else get this email today?

Do you think it simply got lost on its way here? Not to sound like arrogant but I was sort of expecting one, and Dartmouth went way down in my esteem when I didn't receive anything.

Is it too early to celebrate?

This was the message.

Dear (name omitted),

In light of the positive news you should have received from us in the past few weeks, we would like to invite you to Dimensions of Dartmouth!

This program is designed to give Class of 2009 candidates a chance to experience all that Dartmouth has to offer.

We invite you to visit campus on Wednesday, April 20 through Saturday, April 23, 2005.

In order to make it easier for you to get to campus, we have made arrangements with the Boston Coach bus company to provide prospective students from the Boston and New York City metro area with the opportunity to come to our campus for a visit during Dimensions of Dartmouth. Space is limited so be sure to register once you know your plans.

You could be in the last wave, and haven't gotten your letter yet.

Testing for understanding;

You did not get the snail mail version of the likely but you got the e-mail inviting you to dimensions. I would repsond to the e-mail or phone the office and state your intentions to attend if that is your desire.

The one thing is certain, If you sign up for Dimensions, it is definitely going to make them aware that you are seriously considering Dartmouth. That is going to prompt a cross-reference as the school will not want to be caught with egg on their face. It is a strong possiblity that you have gotten a letter that is lost in the mail or fallen through the cracks. The ball is now in your court.

I think you probably were admitted.

This happened to a bunch of kids in CT; you're in.

See thread "In what form"...someone called admissions and your letter's on the way.

I got a likely letter but no invitation to Dimensions, what does that mean?

It means that you have still been admitted. You will get an invitation when you get yor RD letter and they may not be subsidizing your trip (the main reason that people get a straight out invitation) Don't worry, you will still be invited, and if you want to go have a wonderful time. My suggestion is if you plan on going check out the airfares now so that you can get the best deal.

* Congratulations *

So basically only a select number of the likelies get subsidized airfare on account of purely merit? And a few others get it on account of location and URM status?

well, I'm an URM, but I still have to pay my way (granted, my way is $30 on the dimensions bus), so I think its purely need-based.

Dartmouth does not give out merit money, everything is need based. It even carries over to campus as if you are getting any type of financial aid, you wil get a reduced pricing on DOC trips, tutoring and study groups:

http://www.dartmouth.edu/~acskills/tutors/join.html

The cost for tutoring is $7 per hour. Students who are on financial aid qualify for up to three hours of tutoring per week, per subject. Non-financial aid students pay their tutors directly. To determine whether you are eligible for financial aid, fill out the Financial Aid Verification Form and stop by the Financial Aid Office (McNutt Hall).

To sign up for a study group, stop by the Academic Skills Center and complete a study group application. If you are a student on financial aid, be sure to complete the Financial Aid Verification Form prior to coming in. The cost for joining a study group is $10 for students on financial aid; $30 for non-financial aid students.
