How do you tell people that you are attending Dartmouth without sounding pretentious?

u’re lucky u even sound pretentious…in the south, i tell them im going to dartmouth and 98% of the people either ask “where is that?” or “is that here in Georgia or outside the state”

i think u can just tell people. i feel its a name that those who matter are very fond of, but the general public are generally unaware…especially on the west coast. ive seen this question on every ivy league thread, lol.

Professional people seem to recognize it more, but when i generally tell people they don’t know what it is or where it is. The people though (like doctors and lawyers) that find out that I am going are really impressed.

Just say “Dartmouth College.” I think that sounds less pretentious than plain old “Dartmouth,” which I think assumes the person you’re talking to has heard of it.

If they want more information, tell them it’s in New Hampshire. If they’ve never heard of it, why bother to try to impress them? They’re not worth impressing. They’ll perhaps go off and look it up, and then later they’ll be impressed. In the meantime, you’ll look classy for not bringing up things like “Ivy League” and “Top Ten school” and so forth to dazzle them.

If you don’t live in the NE, just say, “Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.”

@EmekChris…are you a ■■■■■?

Just say, “I’m going to an Ivy League institution, it’s called Dartmouth, ever heard of it? It’s really no big deal.”

EmekChris is def. not a ■■■■■. lol.

Emek, you are lucky to live in an area that may have heard of Dartmouth. Most of the times, I just get a glassy look and “Where is that?” :)

EmekChris is just lonely, with too much time on his hands.

Most people have never heard of Dartmouth, Dartmouth College, or Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.

And for those very few who have, you get one of two reactions. “You must be smart, because I got rejected” or “Why, did you not get in to Harvard?”

Well he wrote the exact same question on the threads of other Ivies. Either he’s going to multiple colleges or he is overly worried about sounding pretentious. IMHO…that = ■■■■■

No, I just wanted different opinions. I am using the responses in a research paper.

Come on EmekChris. Tell us about this research paper.

Please do. And where are you actually attending?

It is just for this sociology class that I am taking during the summer. I am going to Dartmouth this fall.

Just say Dartmouth. If they ask you where it is, or what kind of school it is, then tell them.

It is more pretentious to tell people where it is before they ask, because it assumes that they don’t know.

To give you an example: I met a kid a number of years ago at a friend’s house who, in response to my inquiry, told me that he was going to Princeton. Since I didn’t say anything other than “oh”–or maybe faint–he said, “It’s in New Jersey.” My father went to Yale, I went to Wellesley, various other friends and family members have gone to the rest of the Ivies, the U of C, Hopkins, Stanford, MIT, etc. I was intimately acquainted with the Ivy League and other elite schools before he was born.

HE appeared pretentious.

No. He appeared condescending.

lol@ EmekChris.

Thread name creativity fail!

To answer the question, I usually answer “Dartmouth” or “Dartmouth College” when asked. Usually people have heard of the school.

When I returned to my high school for Thanksgiving break, my former PE teacher asked me where I was going to college. He hadn’t heard of Dartmouth… he asked if it was UMass-Dartmouth… I told him it was in New Hampshire and that it was a small school and left it at that. Sometimes it’s worth shouting, “IT’S AN IVY LEAGUE SCHOOL, B****!”. Other times it’s not.

When I tell people, they’re either impressed or they’re confused.

Impressed: “Wow!” “Oh, awesome!” “Whoa! You must be pretty smart, then!”

Confused: “Nice…” “Where’s that?” “What’s that?”

If you really dont wanna be pretentious, just say a small school in New Hampshire. On the off chance they do ask which college exactly, then say Dartmouth and people won’t get all ooooooh and ahhhhhh
