When I went to UVa many years ago, the class sizes for the first 2 courses in most departments were large - 200 to 500 students. Of course, these large classes were then supplemented with discussion sessions or labs in most cases each week, with high quality TAs with small classes. Math and composition intro class sizes were small, with high quality TAs teaching the composition classes.

In my day, the best professors were often given the largest classes.

Beyond the first 2 classes in each dept., class sizes were typically 15 to 35 students.

I’d be very interested in hearing comments from recent or current students about this issue. Many people list intro class sizes as the one negative about UVa. Thoughts???

I just sent you a pm (I think I have never sent one before lol)

Thanks for this link. It lists maximum class sizes and actual enrollment for each class in each department. The class sizes look about the same as 30 years ago when I was there.
