We're trying to book plane tickets, cross country, for son for fall semester. How do people book the December leg when one has no idea when the finals will end?

I see that the last date for finals is 12/17, but do they really have them on that friday? I don't want to book the return flight earlier than friday and have to pay to change, but don't want him to sit there for days waiting until friday evening if he gets done by monday, for example.

Your son’s professors will also often announce more information about the final exam during the first couple days. Some professors decide to make their finals take-home so that you don’t have to be there in person to submit them; others decided to hold the final on the last day of class or reschedule them earlier in the finals period if they’re scheduled towards the end (both of which violate the University’s policy on finals, which I’ve been told there has a push to enforce in recent years, so this may not be as common anymore).

I would definitely wait until a few weeks into the year when your son’s schedule is finalized (he may end up hating a class he’s in or finding a new class he loves) and he’s heard from all his professors what his finals will be like before buying tickets
