I'm a prospective male student considering going to RPI. Obviously the academics are great, I'm just worried about the social aspect of it. The male-female ratio is a little scary at 3-1, and I've heard the social scene leaves alot to be desired. I'm the kind of person who needs something to do in order to meet people. I was wondering what current students think of the social/dating scene.

I think it was actually 60:40 for the freshmen class this year. You basically have the first few weeks to get a girlfriend, after that most of them are taken.

It depends on you. My son has had several girlfriends while at RPI. Relationships don’t last forever at that stage so just cause someone is dating someone at the beginning of the term doesn’t mean they will stay dating.

My son says he’s so busy it is really hard to have a girlfriend on top of classes and activities, his current girlfriend was in his classes which really helped.

An often told joke is that if you discount the gamers, the ratio is 50:50.

RPI girls have a saying “When the odds are good, the goods are odd.” If you have a nice personality, some social skills and you bathe, you will have a good chance of getting a girl. Just do it fast like Joshua said. People usually pair up within the first few months.
