What is the dating scene like at Columbia? I'm kind of nervous that it doesn't exist being in the city and all.

there's already a thread about this in the 2011 forum

I just looked and couldnt' find one...what's it under.

Couldn't find it either. Regardless, you meet people through

classes

roommates' friends

floormates' friends

activities/groups

friends of friends

parties

pre-orientation events like COOP

There's experimentation with relationships in college. You'll have friends who get drunk with freedom and go around hooking up with everything in sight, and then get existentially depressed and seek a long-term relationship. You'll have the marginally more mature guys who aren't quite sure how to approach or handle women, but are fundamentally nice and thoughtful and keep long-term relationships going. There's a sizeable chunk of the school that seems to never leave the library (i'd say maybe 20%).

As for what there is to do, I mean, depends on the kind of person you are. There are a bunch of neighborhood bars that are popular, or other neighborhoods that are equally as popular. Everything from movie theaters to pool halls to the roofs of buildings to elegant restaurants to crack houses are right nearby. OK, maybe not the crack houses. I think.

I'm not sure what else to say - what exactly are you asking? It's not a wild-and-crazy hookup scene like Duke. On the other hand, while there are frats, sororities, and the related parties, it's not at ALL a requirement that you have to be in one or friends with one to have much of a social life. I know a handful of cool and interesting fratboys, but there's sort of a belief on campus that if you NEED the greek scene in order to have a social life, you're kind of lame.

thanks! I was just afraid that everyone took off into the city so nobody ever really hung out to meet each other or develop long term relationships. I'm not into the party scene and don't want a frat heavy school so Columbia sounds like a good fit.

wow it definitely got deleted....i definitely posted in some thread about it less than a week ago......crazy.

i guess i could just hit the edit button on the previous post but im lazy and want to pad my numbers....

dont get him wrong, a lot of people go bar hopping, even tho i tend to think thats mostly upper classmen (or maybe my class is just different). but again, its not like its a requirement to do it.

i really think there are 4 kinds of people here (again, in my class at least): those who actually do go out into the city and party (25%), those who stay at campus and have fun (40%), those who WANT to go out and do things but dont for whatever reason (20%), and those that do nothing (10%)
so its not really like the campus is a ghost town on the weekends or anything, there's always life

How many students just study 24/7?

its columbia...i'm sure there are plenty of those even with the so-called college 'freedom'

um....actually its just a good school. you can go anywhere in the ivy or outside it and find people in the libraries every friday night.

The question is, how many people in the library on a Friday night?

answer for question?

Library is maybe 25-30% full on Thursday (usually no classes fridays). Again, a lot of factors need to be considered: is it midterm/finals season etc.

Also, in Butler, a good number of the people studying there are graduate students.

Another thing to keep in mind: there are actually a LOT of libraries one can study at. Myself I prefer the following:

Butler
Lehman (SIPA)
Diamond (Law school)
B-School
CV Starr (East Asian)

All of the above are excellent facilities, however, only Butler is open 24/7.

During Finals time, the best places to study are probably the Chemistry library, the Physics library, or the Engineering library - based solely on the likelihood of finding some study space you can use.

I think the original estimates in this thread of “how many people are studying on a thursday/friday night?” were accurate - about 20%. If you expect to get decent grades, some weeks that will be you. For some people, that’s them every week.

god that made me lol. because that’s exactly how I would describe my boyfriend who goes to columbia lol

^part of the reason you chose Columbia over Penn after all? :p

some nice thread necromancy going on here, thread started in march 07 lol.
