David McCullough Passes Away

One of my favorite authors of any genre. I read his first book, “Path Between the Seas,” about the building of the Panama Canal, when it was assigned in my American History class in college. I loved how he brought history to life! It’s sad he passed away, but he lived to 89.

Several decades later, I read it for USH. As we not-so-affectionately referred to the book - The Big Ditch. I hated that assignment.

Still, there is no denying that he was a brilliant historian, and I did enjoy his later biographies, Truman and John Adams. RIP.

His “Truman” did more for its subject than any other presidential biography, IMO.

That’s so funny. Maybe it’s because I’m an engineer I liked it?

He was also somewhat prolific in making them and known for his commencement addresses. I listened to his self narrated book on Audible, The American Spirit which is a collection of his most well known speeches. It includes several of of his commencement addresses. Two that stood out were Union College in New York and at Pitt, McCullough’s hometown.

We have The Wright Brothers book on our bookcase so I’m going to look through it again. We like history and non fiction books and David McCullough was one of the best in that. My late mother in law grew up in the same neighborhood in Pittsburgh that he did, Point Breeze.

His wife of many years just died in June. RIP to both.

May he rest in peace. He was an extremely talented man.

He spoke at our daughter’s commencement - he was really amazing. He was the perfect person to speak at the end of her most wonderful four years.

I think his death got overshadowed a bit with the announcement of Olivia Newton-Johns death. Books about the Johnstown flood, Panama Canal, John Adams, etc. Long marrrriage to someone he met as a teenager. They died weeks apart.
