Davidson Outdoors is the club and The Odyssey is the feshman fun-fling right?
Do you do The Odyssey to join Davidson Outdoors?

Is being in Davidson Outdoors expensive?

If anyone has experience/knowledge of these programs it would be much appreciated =D

Amplifiar, where are thou?

I art looking into the matter!

I didn't do Odyssey -- I'm scared of bugs and bears and snakes and...well, to put it simply, I am not Nature-Girl.

Davidson Outdoors is, unless I am mistaken, not exactly a club, so much as it is a set campus organization. Odyssey is a ~week long program held the summer before your freshman year.

Give me a little while to at least find someone to direct you guys to -- I honestly haven't done anything with them and don't know a lot about it. I know kids who are involved, and if I see them around, I'll make sure to ask ASAP! :)

Okay! Here's what I've got for you!

If you have specific questions, email eddaugherty@davidson.edu. She's really nice and always gives good answers to questions.

Again, I didn't do Odyssey...but a ton of my friends did and really enjoyed it. It gives you the chance to get to know kids (in person, not just on Facebook) before school starts. I believe the trips are led, at least in part, by older students. Could be mistaken, but I think it's possible the last session of Odyssey can move in a day or two early.

Oh, and PS: Davidson Outdoors offers "alternative breaks" that I think anyone can sign up for. Instead of going home or out of town for spring break, you can go camping at the Everglades, for example, with Davidson Outdoors.

And also, some PEs are offered through Davidson Outdoors.

Odyssey used to count toward PE credit, but I don't think it does anymore. Used to count for one water and one lifetime.

Note: Ed Daugherty=man, not woman as indicated above

I did Odyssey this year, and I would suggest it to anyone entering Davidson. Even if you're not big on nature or athletics, the hikes aren't THAT intense (unless you don't ever exercise.. at all), and it's a great opportunity to meet people. It's a great bonding experience, and I'm actually best friends with one of my trip members.

It's definitely an interesting experience, and I think about half the freshman class does it. Just about everyone says they would do it again in a heartbeat.

Davidson Outdoors (DO) is the organization that puts on Odyssey, but you don't have to join DO to do Odyssey or anything.. DO has lots of hikes and expeditions throughout the year that people do.. Like I said, I'm not a huge hiker/camper, so DO is not really for me, but many students love it

Thank you amplifiar and wildchild! I definitely would be interested in Odyssey/DO :)

Many thanks for all your info, amplifiar - -very helpful!

Prego! And whoops on the Ed D. gender mix up. I actually know an Edna Daugherty, so that's probably why I messed that one up!

Davidson Outdoors is a campus organization that runs several weekend trips over the course of the semester. Trips range from kayaking to climbing to backpacking to fly fishing and usually cost $25-$75. DO also has a free climbing wall, free kayak roll session, gear you can rent cheaply and a variety of other events throughout the semester. They also run a wilderness leadership skills course with weekly meetings and two trips; this class allows you to lead trips for DO. Most of the trips are open to anyone, whether or not they went on odyssey, are involved with DO, have been on trips in the past, etc.

DO is one of the best things I have been involved with at Davidson. The people and trips are so much fun and it is amazing to explore North Carolina's beautiful hills and rivers. Plus, the WLSC course helped me improve as a leader and was my favorite part of freshman year.

DO also runs Odyssey during the summer. This is a week long wilderness or service trip for incoming freshmen. GO ON ODYSSEY. It will be the best decision you ever make. You make friends that you will be excited to see again at orientation, meet members of your class, and have an incredible time. I am a junior and am still close friends with the people and leaders from my odyssey crew.

Hope this helps!

Thanks littleturtle10!

If I get in I would love to try it!

Bringing this back to life!
